Chapter 4 - The Letter Sophia Never Sent

Elena did not deny it.
That hurt more than Daniel expected.
“You knew?”
“She talked about leaving.”
“With my sons?”
“With her sons.”
Daniel stood so fast the chair rolled backward.
“They were mine too.”
“I know.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Elena’s voice stayed steady.
“Because she was afraid of what your family would do if they knew.”
“My family?”
“Your mother called Sophia unstable every time she asked about money. Michael told you she was emotional. You repeated both things.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I never threatened custody.”
“No.”
Elena’s eyes softened.
“You just kept assuming she would never really leave.”
That landed.
Daniel walked to the window.
Outside, Miles and Noah were asleep in the guest wing with Mrs. Alvarez.
Four years ago, he had been a different kind of absent.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
He came home.
He ate dinner.
He kissed his sons.
Then every serious conversation ended when the company called.
Pike cleared his throat.
“I need whatever else is in that box.”
The sealed envelope contained a draft letter addressed to Daniel.
Sophia had never sent it.
Daniel,
I am not leaving because I stopped loving you. I am leaving because loving you has become a requirement that I accept whatever your family does.
He read more slowly.
I asked you to look at the trust. You told me Michael would handle it.
I asked you why your mother had my medical records. You said she was helping with insurance.
I asked why Elena’s name appeared in documents she never signed. You told me not to create accusations without proof.
I found the proof.
Daniel sat down.
The letter continued.
I plan to take the boys to my father’s cabin for two weeks while my attorney files for temporary financial protections. I am not disappearing with them. I am trying to force you to pay attention.
Pike said quietly, “That sounds different from taking them away.”
Daniel nodded.
It was.
Michael had turned a temporary separation into abduction.
Sophia’s letter ended:
If you choose them after you know the truth, at least I will know it was a choice.
Daniel folded the paper.
He had never been given the chance to make that choice.
But only because Sophia had died before she delivered the letter.
That did not excuse the years before it.
Victoria appeared in the doorway with an officer behind her.
“I want my attorney.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You should have one.”
Her eyes flashed.
“I did not plant the bag.”
“You stood there.”
“Your mother told me Elena had stolen from the boys’ trust.”
“Then why not call police with evidence?”
Victoria looked away.
“Because she said Elena had the trust key.”
Daniel laughed once.
“So this was about the brass box.”
“I thought she took it.”
“It belonged to Sophia.”
“She was dead.”
The sentence changed the room.
Daniel’s voice became very quiet.
“And you thought that meant her wishes stopped mattering.”
Victoria’s face crumpled for half a second.
Then hardened again.
“You want the truth? Your mother told me Elena was trying to get custody.”
Elena almost laughed.
“I’m a maid.”
Victoria snapped, “You’re the trust protector.”
“I found that out tonight.”
Victoria stared.
That surprised her.
Pike noticed.
“So you knew.”
Victoria did not answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“How long?”
“Six months.”
“How?”
“Margaret showed me the trust.”
“Why?”
Victoria’s lips trembled.
“Because she wanted me to replace Elena.”
Daniel stopped.
“As protector?”
“No.”
Victoria swallowed.
“As the boys’ emergency guardian.”
The room went silent.
Daniel felt cold.
“We have a will.”
“You have an old will.”
“My sister Rachel is guardian if I die.”
Victoria shook her head.
“Not anymore.”
Daniel stared.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“What did my mother do?”
Victoria looked toward the hallway.
“She had you sign an amended estate plan after our wedding.”
Daniel remembered a signature packet.
Tax updates.
Insurance.
Marital domicile forms.
He had signed where Thomas Mercer marked yellow tabs.
His stomach turned.
“What does it say?”
Victoria whispered, “If you’re dead or declared incapacitated, I get temporary custody of the twins.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“And if Elena has a criminal conviction, she loses trust protector status.”
Victoria nodded.
Margaret’s plan became visible.
Remove Elena.
Control the boys.
Control the trust.
Control the shares.
Pike said, “Where is Mrs. Crawford now?”
Daniel turned toward the monitor.
Margaret was no longer in the house.
A driveway camera showed her black sedan leaving through the gate twelve minutes earlier.
Then another alert appeared.
The family office security system.
Unauthorized after-hours access.
Daniel opened the feed.
Margaret had gone directly to Crawford Harbor headquarters.
And she was not alone.
Michael was waiting for her.
