Chapter 8 - Victoria Was Not the Only One Being Used

Victoria came back to the estate under escort.
Not to live.
To answer questions.
Daniel met her in the glass breakfast room.
Elena stayed with the twins upstairs.
“Did you know Evan had bearer bonds?”
Victoria stared at him.
“What?”
“Three million dollars’ worth.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“They were in my mother’s safe.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Did Evan really owe Michael nine hundred thousand?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Sports betting. Private games.”
“Proof?”
She opened her phone.
Payment demands.
Threats.
Interest schedules.
Michael’s investment company.
The debt looked real.
But the three-million-dollar bonds suggested something else.
Daniel called Evan.
No answer.
Victoria started shaking.
“He said he was in Denver.”
“Since when?”
“Yesterday.”
Daniel asked security to locate his last estate entry.
Evan had visited Margaret’s office six times in two months.
No social visit had been disclosed.
The auditor traced the offshore company.
Keystone Meridian Ltd.
Registered in Belize.
Beneficial owner hidden.
But one historic email connected the formation paperwork to Thomas Mercer, family counsel.
Daniel’s anger turned colder.
This was not only Michael lending Victoria’s brother money.
Evan had been used as a nominee.
Maybe willingly.
Maybe not.
Victoria covered her face.
“I was stupid.”
Daniel said nothing.
“I thought Margaret was helping me save him.”
“She was helping herself.”
Victoria looked up.
“And you?”
“What about me?”
“You keep saying everyone else was manipulated.”
Daniel frowned.
“I’m not.”
“Yes, you are.”
She stood.
“You were manipulated by the same thing all of us were.”
“What?”
“The idea that the family would always clean up the details.”
Daniel stared at her.
She continued.
“You didn’t ask why your mother knew everything. You didn’t ask why Michael could fix every bank problem. You didn’t ask why Thomas put yellow tabs on documents and told you where to sign.”
“That does not excuse you.”
“I know.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“But stop acting like you’re the only adult in this house who gets to call himself careless instead of guilty.”
The sentence landed hard.
Daniel looked away.
Victoria was guilty of helping frame Elena.
He was guilty of signing blindly.
Different acts.
Different consequences.
Both mattered.
At 4:00 p.m., Evan finally called from a motel outside Knoxville.
He sounded terrified.
“I didn’t steal any bonds.”
“Then why is your company on them?”
“What company?”
“Keystone Meridian.”
Silence.
Victoria grabbed the phone.
“Evan?”
He started crying.
“Vic, I messed up.”
“What did you do?”
“Michael told me he could wipe the debt.”
“How?”
“I signed company papers.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Nominee.
Exactly.
Evan continued.
“He said it was a holding vehicle for investment income. I never got money from it.”
“Did you sign bond transfers?”
“I signed blank pages.”
Victoria swore.
Daniel asked, “Why are you in Tennessee?”
“Because Michael told me police were going to charge me.”
“He lied.”
“I don’t know who’s lying anymore.”
“Come back with a lawyer.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
Evan’s breathing became fast.
“Someone followed me from the airport.”
Daniel stood.
“What kind of car?”
“Black Tahoe.”
Michael drove one.
So did half the security contractors in the state.
“Stay inside. Call local police.”
“I did.”
A knock sounded through Evan’s phone.
He whispered, “Someone’s at the door.”
“Do not open it.”
Another knock.
Then a man’s voice.
“Mr. Grant? Hotel management.”
Evan whispered, “That’s not the manager.”
The line cut.
Victoria screamed his name.
Daniel called 911 in Knoxville.
For fourteen minutes, nobody in the breakfast room breathed normally.
Then local police called back.
Evan was alive.
The motel room was empty when officers arrived.
Rear window open.
Phone on the floor.
No blood.
No struggle.
A camera showed Evan climbing out by himself and running into the woods behind the property.
Why?
Because the man at the door was not Michael.
It was Thomas Mercer.
The family lawyer.
And footage showed Thomas carrying a document case Daniel recognized.
Sophia’s missing legal archive.
