The charity gala was still buzzing downstairs when I stepped onto the rooftop terrace, phone pressed to my ear.
Down in the ballroom, my husband Daniel was smiling for the cameras, arm around my waist in photos from five minutes ago. He had no idea I had already left.
“Dad,” I whispered, voice steady despite the shaking in my hands. “It’s time.”
