Chapter 2: The Lie That Lasted Seven Years

Chapter 2: The Lie That Lasted Seven Years

The courtroom exploded.

"What?"

I couldn't breathe.

The woman walked forward.

Trembling.

"My name is Sarah."

Nobody spoke.

She pointed at the little boy.

"That's my son."

Then she pointed at me.

"And he's your child too."

I felt dizzy.

"That's impossible."

Sarah looked devastated.

"I wish it was."

The judge immediately suspended the hearing.

Everyone was ordered into a private conference room.

I sat across from Ethan.

My husband of ten years.

The man I trusted more than anyone.

"Talk."

Ethan stared at the table.

"Claire..."

"Talk."

His voice cracked.

"The baby was born alive."

The room spun.

"No."

"Claire..."

"You told me she died."

Tears filled my eyes.

"I held a funeral."

Ethan started crying.

Real crying.

The kind I'd never seen before.

"Your father made me do it."

I froze.

"What?"

Sarah looked shocked.

"My father-in-law?"

Ethan nodded.

"He hated that our child was born with a serious medical condition."

Silence.

The little boy sat quietly beside Sarah.

Holding a stuffed bear.

"He said the treatments would bankrupt the family."

My chest tightened.

"So you let him take my baby?"

"I thought she would die."

The room became very still.

Then Sarah spoke.

"Except she didn't."

Everyone turned toward her.

"Your daughter survived."

I stood up.

My chair crashed backward.

"Where is she?"

Sarah began crying.

"That's the problem."

A terrible feeling settled inside my chest.

Sarah whispered:

"She's missing."
