PART 4

The Man They Couldn't Silence

For the first time in seven months...

Agent Clara Bennett forgot the cameras.

Forgot the wedding.

Forgot Julian.

She stared at Eleanor Hawthorne.

"My father?"

Eleanor smiled.

"So they never told you."

The lead agent stepped between them.

"Mrs. Hawthorne, you're done talking."

"No," Clara said quietly.

"Let her."

Eleanor folded her hands as if she were sitting down for afternoon tea instead of standing in the middle of a federal crime scene.

"Your father wasn't killed in a random car accident."

Clara felt the air leave her lungs.

"He spent two years investigating my husband."

"He found our offshore accounts."

"Our shell companies."

"Our fake charities."

"He was very... persistent."

Julian looked at his mother in disbelief.

"What are you saying?"

Eleanor ignored him.

"He came here one night carrying a warrant."

She looked directly into Clara's eyes.

"He never made it to court."

Clara's voice was almost a whisper.

"You had him murdered."

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't have to."

The forensic accountant suddenly called from inside the mansion.

"Agent Bennett!"

"We found another server!"

Clara ran inside.

The hidden room led to another concealed door behind a bookshelf.

This room was smaller.

Older.

Dust covered everything.

In the center sat an aging desktop computer connected to backup drives.

The technician powered it on.

The screen flickered.

One folder appeared.

BENNETT INVESTIGATION

No password.

Only one video file.

Recorded eleven years earlier.

Clara clicked Play.

The image shook before stabilizing.

A man appeared on the screen.

Her father.

Detective Michael Bennett.

Older than she remembered.

More tired.

But smiling.

"If you're watching this..."

"...it means I ran out of time."

Clara's knees weakened.

The room fell completely silent.

"I've gathered enough evidence to expose the Hawthorne organization."

"They don't just steal companies."

"They steal people."

"They force marriages."

"Forge signatures."

"Destroy anyone who stands in their way."

He paused.

"If something happens to me..."

"...promise me one thing."

The camera moved closer.

"Don't waste your life chasing revenge."

"Finish the job."

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

The lead agent quietly placed a hand on Clara's shoulder.

"You just did."

At that exact moment, another investigator rushed into the room.

"Agent!"

"We've matched the financial records."

"The money trail connects twenty-seven fraudulent marriages."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"We found twelve living victims."

Every one of them had believed they were alone.

Every one of them had signed away homes, businesses, inheritances...

Thinking they had simply trusted the wrong family.

Clara slowly stood.

"Bring them here."

May you like

"All of them."

"It's time they heard the truth."
