PART 2

Who Sent You?

Not a single phone in the garden stopped ringing.

Executives stepped away from their tables.

Investors stared at their screens.

One elderly board member looked up at Julian with a face that had gone completely white.

"What... did you send us?"

Clara answered before Julian could speak.

"The truth."

Julian snatched his own phone from his pocket.

His inbox was overflowing.

Subject: Board Review – Urgent.

Subject: Recorded Conversation.

Subject: Immediate Shareholder Meeting.

He tapped the first attachment.

His own voice filled the garden.

"Push her into the mud."

Another voice followed.

His mother's.

"Once the marriage license is signed, she's useless."

Julian's breathing became shallow.

The recording continued.

"Everyone will believe the wheelchair."

"She'll be too embarrassed to fight back."

"We'll make sure she leaves with nothing."

Guests who had been smiling only moments earlier slowly stepped away from the family.

Someone whispered,

"They planned this..."

Another quietly lowered her phone.

No longer recording for entertainment.

Recording evidence.

Julian looked at Clara.

"You recorded us."

"You recorded yourselves," Clara replied. "I simply gave you an audience."

His mother pointed a shaking finger at her.

"You manipulated us!"

Clara gave a small shrug.

"I listened."

"There's a difference."

The family attorney pushed through the crowd.

His face was pale.

"Julian..."

"We have a serious problem."

Julian grabbed him.

"Fix it."

"I can't."

"Why not?"

The attorney swallowed.

"Three investors have already suspended funding."

"The bank just froze the acquisition loan."

"What?"

"And..."

He hesitated.

"The Securities Commission has requested an emergency meeting."

Julian stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"No."

A new voice echoed across the garden.

"It isn't."

Every head turned.

A tall gray-haired man stepped out of a black sedan that had just pulled into the driveway.

Behind him came two women carrying briefcases.

And four men in dark suits.

Julian recognized him immediately.

Richard Donovan.

Chairman of the company's largest investment group.

The man Julian had spent five years trying to impress.

Richard walked straight past Julian.

Straight past his mother.

He stopped in front of Clara.

Then, to everyone's astonishment...

He smiled.

"Miss Bennett."

Julian frowned.

"Miss... Bennett?"

Richard nodded respectfully.

"We've been waiting for your report."

The garden fell silent.

Julian looked from Clara to Richard.

"What report?"

Clara calmly removed the engagement ring from her finger.

"I wasn't sent here to become your wife."

She placed the ring on the nearest champagne table.

"I was sent to determine whether your family deserved another dollar of investor money."

No one spoke.

Richard turned toward the crowd.

"Six months ago..."

"Our investment group received anonymous reports regarding financial misconduct inside the Hawthorne family businesses."

He looked at Clara.

"We needed someone no one would suspect."

Julian's mother took a step backward.

"No..."

Richard continued.

"So we hired the best corporate forensic investigator in the country."

Julian laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous."

Richard didn't even look at him.

"Her real name isn't Clara Evans."

"It's..."

Before he could finish...

A black SUV sped through the front gate.

Its tires screamed across the stone driveway.

The vehicle stopped only a few feet from the wedding guests.

The doors flew open.

Four federal agents stepped out.

The woman leading them held up a warrant.

She scanned the crowd.

Then locked eyes with Clara.

"Agent Bennett."

"We're ready."

The entire garden froze.

Julian looked at Clara as if seeing a complete stranger.

His voice barely worked.

"Who... are you?"

Clara slowly turned to face him.

The warmth was gone from her eyes.

"My name..."

She reached into the inside pocket of her ruined wedding dress and produced a leather credential wallet.

She flipped it open.

A gold badge caught the afternoon sun.

"I'm Special Agent Clara Bennett."

"And your family has been under federal investigation for the last seven months."

The smile disappeared from every face in the Hawthorne family.

May you like

Because the wedding had never been the end of Clara's plan.

It had only been the moment the arrests could finally begin.
