PART 3

The House Full of Secrets

No one spoke.

The only sound in the garden was the clicking of cameras as wedding guests instinctively stepped back.

Agent Clara Bennett calmly handed her credentials to the lead investigator.

"Proceed."

Within seconds, federal agents spread across the estate.

Two headed for the main house.

Another team secured the accounting office.

A fourth began collecting every phone, laptop, and security server they could find.

Julian finally found his voice.

"You can't do this."

One of the agents looked at him.

"We already are."

His mother stepped forward, trying to regain control.

"You have no warrant to search my private residence."

The lead agent held up a thick folder.

"We have six."

He smiled politely.

"Signed by three different federal judges."

The color drained from her face.

Inside the mansion...

Agents moved room by room.

The library.

The office.

The wine cellar.

Everything appeared immaculate.

Until one investigator stopped in front of a painting hanging behind Julian's father's old desk.

"Something's wrong."

The frame was newer than the wall around it.

He lifted it.

A hidden keypad appeared.

The technician connected a portable device.

Thirty seconds later...

The lock clicked.

The wall slowly slid open.

Behind it was a narrow room no architect had included on the official blueprints.

Rows of locked filing cabinets.

Hard drives.

Boxes labeled with years.

And a wall covered with photographs.

Clara stepped inside.

Her expression didn't change.

But her heartbeat did.

Every photograph showed another woman.

Some smiling beside Julian.

Others leaving his family's office in tears.

Some wore engagement rings.

One picture caught Clara's attention.

A young woman standing beside Julian...

...wearing the exact same wedding dress Clara had worn that afternoon.

She turned toward the lead agent.

"How many names are on the files?"

He opened the first drawer.

Then the second.

Then looked back at her.

"Twenty-three."

The room fell silent.

"Twenty-three women."

Outside, Julian watched agents carry boxes out of the mansion.

"What are they taking?" he demanded.

No one answered.

Then Clara walked out carrying a single red file.

She stopped directly in front of him.

"Do you recognize this?"

Julian glanced at the label.

His face went white.

"No..."

His mother lunged for the file.

"Don't!"

Two agents intercepted her before she could reach it.

Clara slowly opened the folder.

Inside were property deeds.

Bank transfers.

Marriage certificates.

Every document was signed by a different woman.

Every signature appeared immediately before the woman lost everything she owned.

Julian whispered,

"My mother..."

Clara looked at him carefully.

"You really didn't know."

He shook his head.

"I thought..."

"I thought there were only a few business settlements."

His mother screamed,

"Stop talking!"

Julian turned toward her.

"What have you done?"

She said nothing.

For the first time in his life...

She couldn't.

The lead forensic accountant hurried across the lawn holding a laptop.

"Agent Bennett."

"You need to see this."

"What is it?"

"We decrypted the offshore server."

He rotated the screen toward her.

Millions of dollars.

Hundreds of transfers.

Dozens of shell companies.

Then one final folder appeared.

Its title made Clara stop breathing for a moment.

PERSONNEL — REMOVE IF NECESSARY

She clicked it open.

Inside were photographs.

Names.

Schedules.

Private investigators' reports.

Not just on investors.

Not just on employees.

On judges.

Journalists.

Witnesses.

And...

On Clara herself.

Everywhere she had gone during the last seven months.

Every meeting.

Every hotel.

Every conversation.

Someone had been watching her from the day she entered Julian's life.

Clara slowly closed the laptop.

Then she looked at Julian's mother.

"You weren't just running a fraud scheme."

Her voice became quieter.

More dangerous.

"You were building a surveillance network."

The older woman smiled for the first time since the agents arrived.

"You've only opened one room, Agent Bennett."

She leaned forward just enough for Clara to hear.

"There are still two you haven't found."

Clara's eyes narrowed.

"What rooms?"

The woman whispered one final sentence.

"The ones your father died trying to expose."

Everything inside Clara seemed to stop.

She had never mentioned her father.

Neither had anyone on the task force.

May you like

Yet somehow...

Julian's mother knew exactly who he was.
