PART 3 The Detective Who Disappeared

Olivia stared at the photograph.

Her hands felt cold.

The face beside Frank Miller was impossible to mistake.

Daniel Hayes.

Her former partner.

Her mentor.

The detective who taught her everything she knew about investigations.

The same man who disappeared six years earlier after claiming he had found evidence against a powerful criminal network.

Everyone believed he had been killed.

Everyone except Olivia.

A part of her always believed he was still out there.

But she never imagined this.

Not like this.

"Detective?"

One of the officers looked at her.

"Do you know him?"

Olivia quickly folded the photograph.

"Yes."

"Who is he?"

She hesitated.

Then answered:

"Someone I trusted."

The officer noticed her expression.

"What does that mean?"

Olivia looked back at the bakery.

"It means we don't know the whole story yet."

The next morning, Olivia visited Emma and Lily at the hospital.

Emma was recovering.

Lily was sitting beside her, holding her hand.

The two sisters looked different.

Not because their situation had changed.

Because they finally felt safe.

When Olivia entered, Lily smiled.

"Did you catch him?"

Olivia nodded.

"Yes."

The little girl looked relieved.

"Then we can go home?"

The question broke Olivia's heart.

Because she knew the answer wasn't simple.

"First, we need to make sure nobody can hurt you again."

Emma looked at her.

"Because of Daniel?"

Olivia froze.

"What did you say?"

Emma looked nervous.

"I heard Frank talking about him."

"When?"

"Before we escaped."

Olivia moved closer.

"What did Frank say?"

Emma swallowed.

"He said Daniel promised nobody would ever find the basement."

Silence.

Olivia felt betrayed.

Daniel hadn't just known.

He had helped.

That afternoon, investigators searched Frank's bakery again.

This time, they found everything.

Hidden cameras.

Fake identities.

Records of payments.

Names of missing children.

But one thing was missing.

Daniel Hayes.

He was gone.

Again.

Three days later...

Olivia received a message.

No number.

No name.

Only an address.

And one sentence:

"You deserve to know why I did it."

She knew immediately.

Daniel.

The address led her to an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

She entered alone.

Not because she was careless.

Because she needed answers.

"Daniel."

A figure stepped from the shadows.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

"Hello, Olivia."

She stared at him.

"Why?"

That was the only question she had.

Why?

Why betray children?

Why betray the badge?

Why betray her?

Daniel looked away.

"I made mistakes."

"No."

Her voice became sharper.

"You made choices."

He sighed.

"Years ago, I found a corruption network."

"Politicians."

"Business owners."

"Law enforcement."

Olivia listened.

"They were using people nobody cared about."

"Children without families."

"People who disappeared without anyone asking questions."

Her face hardened.

"And Frank?"

"Frank was part of it."

"Then why protect him?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Because I thought I could control it."

Olivia stared.

"You became the thing you were trying to stop."

He didn't answer.

Because she was right.

Daniel finally revealed the truth.

Frank wasn't the leader.

He was only the person who handled the locations.

The real mastermind was someone much more powerful.

Someone who used charities and businesses as cover.

Someone who made sure missing children never became headlines.

Olivia looked at him.

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Commissioner Robert Blake."

Olivia froze.

The head of the entire department.

The man who had publicly supported missing children's investigations.

The man who had praised her work.

The man everyone trusted.

Daniel handed her a file.

"I kept evidence."

"Why now?"

"Because I couldn't live with it anymore."

Olivia took the file.

Inside were years of records.

Payments.

Photos.

Names.

Proof.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

"Frank was going to hurt those girls."

"I tried to stop it."

Olivia looked at him.

"But you didn't."

"No."

His voice broke.

"And that is something I have to live with."

The next morning...

Olivia didn't go to Commissioner Blake.

She went directly to federal investigators.

Because she had learned something important.

May you like

Sometimes the person you are supposed to report to...

Is the person you need protection from.
