PART 2 The Room Beneath the Bakery

The basement stairs creaked beneath Olivia's feet.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Behind her, Lily held onto the detective's jacket with both hands.

Not because she was scared of the dark.

Because she was scared of what was waiting below.

Frank stood at the top of the stairs.

"Detective, you are making a serious mistake."

Olivia didn't look back.

"People say that when they're afraid of what I'll find."

"I'm not afraid."

"Then come down with us."

Frank said nothing.

That silence answered for him.

The basement was nothing like the bakery above.

Upstairs, everything was warm.

Bright.

Welcoming.

Down here...

Everything was cold.

The walls were unfinished.

Old boxes were stacked everywhere.

But Olivia noticed something immediately.

This wasn't a storage room.

It was organized.

Too organized.

There were blankets.

Food containers.

Children's drawings taped to the wall.

Olivia's stomach tightened.

She slowly walked forward.

"Lily."

The girl whispered:

"My sister was here."

"Her name is Emma."

"She's twelve."

Olivia turned.

"How long has she been missing?"

Lily looked down.

"Three weeks."

Three weeks.

And nobody reported her missing.

That was the detail that made Olivia's blood run cold.

Then they heard it.

A sound.

Soft.

Weak.

A knock.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

Olivia moved toward the wall.

"Emma?"

A voice answered.

Barely audible.

"Who's there?"

Lily broke down.

"Emma!"

She ran forward.

Olivia grabbed her gently.

"Wait."

She examined the wall.

Something was wrong.

A hidden door.

She found the handle.

And opened it.

Inside...

Was a small room.

And sitting against the wall...

Was Emma.

Alive.

But terrified.

Her face was pale.

Her clothes were dirty.

The moment she saw Lily...

She started crying.

"Lily?"

The little girl rushed into her arms.

"I got help."

"I told you I would."

The two sisters held each other tightly.

And Olivia felt something inside her break.

Because this wasn't just a case.

These were children who had been forgotten.

Paramedics arrived within minutes.

Emma was taken outside.

Lily refused to let go of her hand.

Meanwhile...

Frank finally showed his true colors.

The friendly bakery owner disappeared.

The polite businessman disappeared.

He became angry.

"You can't do this."

Olivia looked at him.

"Do what?"

"Destroy my reputation."

Olivia stared.

"Your reputation?"

"You kept a child locked in a basement."

"And you're worried about your reputation?"

Frank's jaw tightened.

"You don't know the truth."

"Then tell me."

Silence.

"Tell me why a twelve-year-old girl was hidden under your bakery."

Frank looked toward the sisters.

Then lowered his voice.

"Those girls aren't what you think."

Olivia frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"They're trouble."

"They ran away."

"I was trying to help."

Olivia almost laughed.

"Help?"

"By locking them underground?"

Frank looked away.

That was when she knew.

He had no excuse.

Only fear.

At the police station, Emma finally told the truth.

But it wasn't what Olivia expected.

"My parents died two years ago."

"We lived with my uncle."

"But he didn't want us."

"He left us outside a shelter."

Lily grabbed her hand.

"We were trying to survive."

Emma nodded.

"We found work cleaning places."

"Frank saw us."

"He offered food."

"A safe place."

"But after we came here..."

"He wouldn't let us leave."

Olivia leaned forward.

"Why?"

Emma looked terrified.

"Because we saw something."

"What?"

The girl swallowed.

"Frank wasn't just hiding children."

"He was hiding what he was doing with the bakery."

Olivia looked at the evidence collected from the basement.

Old files.

Documents.

Photos.

Then she found something.

A hidden compartment beneath the floor.

Inside was a black notebook.

Frank's notebook.

She opened it.

The first page made her blood run cold.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Every missing child connected to the area.

Not all of them were found.

At midnight...

Olivia returned to the bakery with a search team.

This time with a warrant.

Frank watched from the police car.

Still silent.

Still angry.

But no longer confident.

Because the truth had finally entered his world.

Then one officer called out:

"Detective!"

Olivia turned.

"What did you find?"

The officer held up a small envelope.

"Something hidden behind the bakery wall."

Olivia opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Frank standing beside another man.

A man she recognized.

Her expression changed.

Because the person beside Frank...

Was someone she had been searching for for years.

A former detective.

Someone who had disappeared after investigating the same missing children.

Her own former partner.

Daniel Hayes.

On the back of the photo was a message written by Frank:

"He knew too much."

Olivia stared at the picture.

Because suddenly she understood.

Frank Miller wasn't the beginning of the story.

He was only one piece.

May you like

And the person who had helped him hide everything...

Had been inside law enforcement all along.
