PART 1 The Little Girl Everyone Called a Thief

The crowd gathered before anyone understood what was happening.
A little girl stood in the middle of the sidewalk.
Bare feet.
Dirty clothes.
Tangled hair.
And in her tiny hands...
A loaf of bread.
The bakery owner stood in front of her, his face red with anger.
"Thief."
The word cut through the street.
People stopped walking.
Customers stepped outside the bakery.
Phones came out.
Everyone looked at the little girl.
Her name was Lily.
She was only eight years old.
And she looked terrified.
"I didn't steal it," she whispered.
The man laughed.
"Then why were you running?"
Lily looked behind her.
Toward the alley.
Toward the old brick building behind the bakery.
Her fear wasn't about being caught.
It was about someone finding her.
The bakery owner, Frank Miller, crossed his arms.
"You think people will believe you?"
"You walked out of my store with my bread."
"I saw you."
Lily shook her head.
"I needed it."
The crowd murmured.
Someone said:
"Poor child."
Someone else whispered:
"Still doesn't mean stealing is okay."
Frank smiled.
He loved this moment.
Being the victim.
Being the respected businessman.
Nobody questioned the owner of the oldest bakery in town.
Nobody questioned Frank Miller.
At least...
Not until Detective Olivia Reed arrived.
Olivia had been watching from across the street.
She wasn't there because of the bread.
She was there because of Frank Miller.
For six months, she had been investigating missing-person reports connected to the area.
Three young girls.
Three disappearances.
Three cases with one strange connection.
Every missing child had been last seen near Frank's bakery.
But Frank was careful.
No evidence.
No witnesses.
No reason to arrest him.
Until today.
Olivia walked through the crowd.
"Everyone step back."
Her badge flashed.
The crowd immediately moved.
Frank's confident expression disappeared.
"Detective."
He forced a smile.
"I was just handling a theft."
Olivia looked at Lily.
Then at the bread.
Then back at Frank.
"Interesting."
Frank frowned.
"What is?"
"Because the girl isn't afraid of being arrested."
"She's afraid of you."
The street became silent.
Frank laughed.
"That's ridiculous."
Olivia didn't answer.
She looked at Lily.
"What's your name?"
"Lily."
"Where are your parents?"
The little girl's eyes filled with tears.
She looked toward the bakery.
Then whispered:
"My sister."
Olivia crouched down.
"What about your sister?"
Lily grabbed her sleeve.
"Please."
"You have to help her."
Olivia's expression changed.
"What happened?"
Lily looked around.
Then whispered:
"She's still inside."
Frank immediately stepped forward.
"Don't listen to her."
"She's making things up."
Olivia stood.
"Why would she do that?"
Frank opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the first mistake.
A guilty person always explains too much.
Olivia entered the bakery.
Frank tried to stop her.
"You need a warrant."
She looked at him.
"For what?"
"Searching my property."
Olivia smiled slightly.
"I'm not searching yet."
"I'm looking."
Frank's face tightened.
Because he knew the difference.
The bakery looked normal.
Fresh bread.
Clean counters.
Happy customers.
A perfect image.
But Olivia noticed something.
A locked door behind the kitchen.
"What is that?"
Frank moved quickly.
"Storage."
"Nothing important."
Olivia looked at him.
"Then why are you nervous?"
"I am not."
"You are."
She opened the door.
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
The smell changed.
The warm bakery scent disappeared.
Cold air moved upward.
Olivia's hand went toward her weapon.
"Lily."
The girl appeared behind her.
And whispered:
"That's where he keeps my sister."
The entire world stopped.
Olivia looked down.
"Your sister is down there?"
Lily nodded.
"She told me to run."
"She said if I escaped..."
"Someone might finally believe us."
Frank's face lost all color.
"Detective..."
Olivia turned toward him.
"How many?"
Silence.
"How many children have been down there?"
Frank backed away.
"You don't understand."
Olivia looked at Lily.
Then toward the basement.
"No."
"I think I'm finally starting to understand."
The basement door opened.
The truth behind the bakery was finally about to come out.
And Frank Miller realized something too late.
