Chapter 9 - Beneath the Marble Crest

The Blackwood Hotel was empty when they arrived.
Fire alarms flashed silently in the lobby.
The reported gas leak had been false.
Every guest had been evacuated.
The ballroom doors stood open.
A section of marble near the Ashford crest had been cut away.
Fresh dust covered the floor.
The foundation director had already reached the hidden compartment.
He lay unconscious beside the opening.
A thin wire was wrapped around his neck.
Claire checked his pulse.
“He is alive.”
Luca searched the room.
“No attacker.”
Adrian stared at the chairman’s ring in his hand.
Claire remembered Catherine’s words.
Your father was wearing it the night Thomas died.
“You did not know,” Claire said.
Adrian did not look at her.
“My father gave me this ring when I turned twenty-one.”
“He said it represented duty.”
“It may represent guilt.”
“That does not make it yours.”
He closed his fingers around it.
Claire inserted the silver bird pendant into the first lock beneath the floor.
Adrian used the ring on the second.
The metal case opened.
Inside was a blue ledger.
A reel of microfilm.
A small tape recorder.
And a sealed envelope addressed to Claire.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
My Claire,
If you are reading this, Catherine found a way to bring you home.
Do not mistake blood for family.
Family is the person who stands beside you when the room decides you are not worth defending.
Thomas Bennett.
Claire pressed the letter against her lips.
Sophie’s scream from the ballroom returned to her memory.
Hundreds of people watching.
No one moving.
Then Adrian coming down from the balcony.
Too late.
But coming.
She opened the ledger.
The first pages recorded Ashford trust transfers.
The later pages listed Crown payments.
Police officers.
Judges.
Doctors.
Politicians.
Charity directors.
Nolan Pierce appeared seventeen times.
Malcolm Graves appeared twenty-three.
Victoria appeared on almost every page.
Edward Ashford, Adrian’s father, appeared once.
Beside his name, Thomas had written two words.
TRIED TO LEAVE.
Adrian read it.
His face changed.
Claire touched the tape recorder.
“Maybe this explains.”
Thomas’s voice filled the empty ballroom.
“Edward Ashford came to me tonight.”
“He gave me the chairman’s ring.”
“He said Victoria planned to have Catherine declared dead permanently.”
“He wanted me to take Claire and leave Chicago.”
“He promised to expose the Crown.”
Adrian gripped the table.
Thomas continued.
“Edward is afraid of his wife.”
“He believes she ordered his father’s death.”
“He says Malcolm arranged the car.”
“He says Pierce will stop us before morning.”
The recording crackled.
Another man’s voice entered.
Edward.
“Thomas, someone is downstairs.”
Thomas whispered.
“Take the ledger.”
Edward answered.
“No.”
“If they find it with me, Adrian dies too.”
Footsteps approached on the recording.
Thomas spoke one final time.
“Edward, run.”
A gunshot sounded.
The tape ended.
Adrian stared at the recorder.
“My father tried to help.”
Claire nodded.
“He gave Thomas the ring.”
Catherine had seen Edward wearing it earlier that night.
She had assumed he was responsible.
Luca entered from the hallway.
“We have company.”
Federal vehicles surrounded the hotel.
Detective Pierce walked into the ballroom wearing a bulletproof vest.
His injured shoulder was bandaged from the boathouse.
He had escaped hospital custody.
Twenty armed officers followed him.
Rebecca Sloan stepped forward.
“Pierce, put your weapon down.”
Pierce smiled.
“You believe these men work for the city?”
The officers turned their guns toward the federal agents.
Corrupt police.
Names from the blue ledger.
Claire held the book against her chest.
Pierce pointed at it.
“That belongs to the Crown.”
Adrian moved in front of her.
“The Crown is finished.”
Pierce laughed.
“You think Victoria ran it?”
“She was a spoiled daughter with a useful last name.”
“Who runs it now?” Claire asked.
Pierce looked toward the balcony.
Malcolm Graves appeared above them.
His wounded arm rested in a sling.
A gun remained in his other hand.
Adrian stared.
“You were under federal guard.”
Malcolm smiled.
“So were several men who work for me.”
Catherine had been wrong.
Malcolm was not merely a coward.
He had learned to hide power beneath obedience.
Pierce looked at Claire.
“Give us the ledger.”
“No.”
“We have Sophie.”
Claire’s heart stopped.
Malcolm lifted his phone.
A live video appeared on the ballroom screen.
Sophie sat inside Adrian’s estate library.
A masked man stood behind her.
Eleanor lay on the floor nearby.
Catherine was nowhere visible.
Claire turned toward Luca.
“The estate had federal security.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“The agents were compromised.”
Malcolm spoke from the balcony.
“Place the ledger on the center crest.”
“Walk away.”
Adrian looked toward the screen.
Sophie’s face was frightened.
She was not crying.
Claire saw her hands.
The child was tapping one finger against her knee.
Three taps.
Pause.
Two taps.
Pause.
Three taps.
Sophie had learned the signal from Luca.
Camera.
Window.
Third floor.
She was telling them the video was live from the estate’s third-floor security room.
Luca understood.
He quietly sent the location to his remaining team.
Claire placed the ledger on the crest.
Pierce smiled.
“Step back.”
She moved beside Adrian.
Pierce approached.
The lights went out.
A second recording began playing through the ballroom speakers.
Victoria’s voice filled the room.
“Malcolm, if you are hearing this, I have already told federal investigators about the private accounts.”
Malcolm froze.
Victoria continued.
“You spent thirty years believing you controlled me.”
“You did not.”
“The real ledger was copied before the gala.”
“Every name is already in federal custody.”
Pierce looked toward Malcolm.
“You said she stayed quiet.”
Malcolm’s face twisted.
“She lied.”
Claire realized Adrian had arranged the recording.
He had used Victoria’s cooperation against them.
Federal agents moved during the darkness.
Luca tackled Pierce.
Gunfire struck the ceiling.
Claire pulled Adrian behind the stage.
Malcolm ran toward a private stairwell.
Rebecca’s agents surrounded the corrupt officers.
The ballroom lights returned.
Pierce lay handcuffed on the floor.
The blue ledger remained on the crest.
Malcolm was gone.
Claire looked toward the live screen.
The masked man behind Sophie received a call.
He turned toward the window.
A red light flashed across his chest.
Luca’s team had reached the estate.
The video went black.
Claire grabbed Adrian.
“What happened?”
His phone rang.
He answered.
His face remained tense.
“Sophie is safe.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Eleanor?”
“Alive.”
“Catherine?”
Adrian listened.
Then he looked toward her.
“She was not at the estate.”
Claire’s relief vanished.
A second video appeared on the ballroom screen.
Malcolm sat inside a moving car.
Catherine was beside him.
Her hands were bound.
Malcolm smiled into the camera.
“Victoria wanted the trust.”
“Pierce wanted the ledger.”
“I want something larger.”
Claire stepped toward the screen.
“What?”
Malcolm looked directly at her.
“Ashford Global.”
He placed a gun against Catherine’s side.

“Otherwise, Claire loses her mother for a second time.”
