Chapter 13 - The Wrong Mother

Claire reached Ashford Memorial in seven minutes.

Adrian drove.

Luca’s vehicles surrounded them.

The pediatric floor had been evacuated after a false fire alarm.

Sophie’s examination room was empty.

A nurse lay unconscious inside the supply closet.

Her uniform was missing.

Claire found Sophie’s pink hair ribbon on the floor.

Victoria had taken her.

Security footage showed a nurse pushing Sophie in a wheelchair toward the maternity wing.

The camera angle never revealed the woman’s face.

Claire ran through the corridor.

Adrian followed.

The maternity wing had been closed for renovations.

Plastic sheets covered the walls.

Old nursery windows faced an empty hall.

Sophie’s voice came from behind one door.

“Let me go!”

Claire pushed inside.

Victoria stood beside an operating table.

Sophie was strapped to it.

A surgeon waited near a tray of instruments.

“Step away from her,” Claire said.

Victoria looked up.

Her hair was wet from the river.

A scratch crossed one cheek.

She still looked controlled.

“You arrived faster than your mother did.”

Claire moved closer.

“What are you doing?”

“Removing the mark.”

Sophie twisted against the straps.

“No!”

Victoria touched the crescent scar beneath the child’s shoulder.

“This tiny thing has caused thirty-two years of inconvenience.”

Claire’s voice shook with rage.

“You put it there.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Catherine’s descendants had to be tracked.”

“You marked a newborn baby.”

“I prepared for the future.”

Adrian entered behind Claire.

Victoria looked at him.

Her expression changed.

“You know.”

“That Catherine is my mother?”

“Yes.”

“She wanted you dead.”

“No.”

Victoria’s voice sharpened.

“She left you.”

“She was told I died.”

“She believed what she wanted.”

“You imprisoned her.”

“I protected you from a weak woman.”

Adrian looked toward Sophie.

“You are holding a child on an operating table.”

“Do not speak to me about protection.”

Victoria gestured toward the surgeon.

“Finish it.”

The surgeon stepped backward.

“No.”

Victoria stared.

“You were paid.”

“I was paid to remove scar tissue.”

“Not to operate on a terrified child without consent.”

Victoria reached for a gun beneath the medical tray.

Claire moved first.

She grabbed the tray and threw it.

Instruments crashed across the floor.

Adrian struck Victoria’s wrist.

The gun slid beneath the table.

The surgeon cut Sophie’s restraints.

Claire pulled her daughter free.

Victoria seized a scalpel.

She held it against Adrian’s throat.

Everyone stopped.

Victoria looked at Catherine’s son.

“I raised you.”

“You controlled me.”

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me a dead mother.”

Victoria’s face twisted.

“You think Catherine would have kept you?”

“She ran with Thomas.”

“She had Claire.”

“She forgot you before you could speak.”

Adrian remained still.

“You sound afraid I will choose her.”

“You are mine.”

“No.”

The single word broke something inside Victoria.

She pressed the blade closer.

A thin line of blood appeared.

Claire set Sophie behind the surgeon.

Then she moved toward Victoria.

“Look at me.”

Victoria’s eyes shifted.

“You wanted Catherine’s life.”

“You took her name.”

“Her inheritance.”

“Her mother.”

“Her son.”

“You still could not become her.”

Victoria’s breathing changed.

Claire continued.

“That is why you hate Sophie.”

“She proves Catherine continued without you.”

Victoria turned the scalpel toward Claire.

Adrian caught her wrist.

Luca entered with federal officers.

They surrounded Victoria.

For one second, she looked toward the window.

No tunnel.

No river.

No waiting car.

She dropped the blade.

Agents cuffed her.

Sophie ran into Claire’s arms.

Victoria watched them.

The hatred in her face had become exhaustion.

“You think this ends with me?”

Claire held Sophie.

“It ends with you unable to touch my child.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“Malcolm owns the hospital.”

“He owns the company.”

“He controls the medical records.”

“By morning, the world will believe you abducted Sophie from treatment.”

Rebecca entered.

“Not after the surgeon testifies.”

Victoria looked toward him.

The surgeon avoided her eyes.

Claire saw fear.

Victoria saw it too.

She laughed.

“Everyone testifies until their children are threatened.”

The surgeon’s face went pale.

Luca immediately ordered protection for his family.

Adrian looked at Victoria.

“Who is helping Malcolm?”

She smiled.

“Your board.”

Ashford Global’s directors held an emergency meeting that afternoon.

Malcolm appeared remotely from federal detention.

His attorneys argued that his arrest did not invalidate the share transfer.

Seven board members supported him.

Adrian was removed as chief executive.

Malcolm’s appointed chairman took control.

The company froze every account connected to Adrian.

Security contracts were canceled.

The private guards protecting Catherine, Sophie, and Eleanor were dismissed.

Hospitals refused to release Catherine’s records.

News stations reported that Claire had manipulated a mentally unstable woman to claim an inheritance.

Victoria’s attorneys released photographs of Claire and Adrian together.

Headlines called them secret lovers.

Then reporters learned they were siblings.

The same stations called the photographs evidence of moral corruption.

Claire turned off the television.

“They know we did not know.”

Catherine sat beside her.

“They do not need people to believe forever.”

“They need them confused for one day.”

“Why?”

“To stop the trust hearing.”

The court was scheduled to determine Claire’s identity the next morning.

If the judge recognized Catherine and Claire, control of the family trust would transfer away from Victoria and Malcolm.

At midnight, the DNA laboratory called.

Catherine’s blood sample had been destroyed.

An electrical fire had damaged the evidence refrigerator.

Elise’s backup sample was missing.

Claire looked toward Sophie.

“My daughter has the same mark.”

“A scar proves nothing legally,” Rebecca said.

“Eleanor’s testimony?”

“Victoria’s attorneys will claim she is confused.”

“Catherine?”

“They will challenge her memory.”

Adrian entered holding an old hospital bracelet.

“I have another sample.”

Everyone looked at him.

He placed the bracelet on the table.

It bore the name Baby Boy Ashford.

A dried blood spot remained on the newborn screening card attached to it.

“My father kept this in his safe.”

“If Catherine is my mother, this proves her connection to me.”

Rebecca examined it.

“It proves Catherine had a child.”

“It does not prove Claire is hers.”

Sophie opened her stuffed rabbit.

“What about this?”

Inside was a lock of dark hair tied with red thread.

Claire recognized it.

Her mother had cut it from Claire’s head when she was a baby.

Catherine stared.

“I put that inside your toy.”

Claire looked at Sophie.

“When?”

“Grandma Catherine gave it to me at the hospital.”

Catherine smiled.

“I remembered where Thomas hid it.”

Rebecca took the hair carefully.

“We can test this against Catherine and Adrian.”

Malcolm’s people had destroyed the official sample.

They did not know Catherine had saved a piece of Claire for thirty-four years.

The laboratory worked overnight under federal guard.

At eight the next morning, Rebecca entered the courtroom with the results.

Claire sat beside Catherine.

Sophie held her hand.

Eleanor sat behind them.

Adrian remained near the aisle.

Victoria entered in restraints.

Malcolm appeared by video.

The judge opened the sealed report.

His face changed.

“Catherine Ashford is the biological mother of Claire Bennett.”

“Claire Bennett is the biological mother of Sophie Bennett.”

“Catherine Ashford is also the biological mother of Adrian Ashford.”

A murmur filled the courtroom.

The judge continued.

“Under the Ashford trust, Catherine’s status as firstborn transfers controlling ownership to her legal descendants.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

The judge looked toward Claire and Adrian.

“Control will be divided equally.”

Malcolm’s face disappeared from the video screen.

The connection had been cut.

Adrian’s phone vibrated.

Every Ashford Global system began shutting down.

Malcolm was erasing the company.

Then the courthouse doors opened.

Nolan Pierce entered with a gun.

He aimed directly at Sophie.

“Everybody stays seated.”

Claire pulled her daughter beneath the table.

Pierce smiled.

May you like

“You won the name.”

“Now let us see whether you survive the inheritance.”
