Chapter 4 - Key 214

Luca pushed Sophie behind the kitchen wall.
Adrian pulled Claire beside him.
Another gunshot struck the apartment doorframe.
Wood splintered across the floor.
Mrs. Alvarez crouched behind the couch with the police officer.
The officer reached for his weapon.
A third shot knocked it from his hand.
The shooter remained hidden in the stairwell.
“Key 214,” the voice repeated.
“Slide it into the hallway.”
Claire gripped the brass key.
Adrian looked at her.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“I can replace a key.”
“You cannot replace whatever it opens.”
“I can replace neither of you.”
The shooter laughed.
“Touching.”
Luca spoke quietly into his radio.
No answer came.
“The signal is jammed.”
Adrian glanced toward the fire escape.
“Can we reach the alley?”
Luca looked through the bedroom.
“Two men below.”
Claire touched Sophie’s face.
“Stay quiet.”
Sophie nodded.
Her body trembled.
The shooter called again.
“Ten seconds.”
Claire stood.
Adrian pulled her down.
“What are you doing?”
“Giving him what he wants.”
“You heard the threat.”
“He wants the key more than he wants us dead.”
“You do not know that.”
“I know he did not shoot through the wall.”
Adrian stared at her.
Claire held up the key.
“I am throwing it out.”
Sophie grabbed her sleeve.
“No.”
Claire kissed her hand.
“It is okay.”
She stood near the doorway without exposing herself.
“Five seconds,” the shooter called.
Claire tossed the key into the hall.
Metal struck the floor.
Footsteps approached.
Luca held his weapon ready.
A gloved hand reached around the doorway.
The man grabbed the key.
Claire kicked the door.
It slammed into his arm.
He shouted.
Luca pulled him inside.
Adrian struck the gun from his hand.
The man wore a black mask.
A crown-shaped pin was fastened beneath his collar.
Another shooter opened fire from the stairwell.
Luca dragged the masked man behind the wall.
Claire grabbed the brass key from the floor.
Adrian pushed a heavy cabinet across the entrance.
The second shooter ran.
Sirens sounded outside.
The signal jammer stopped.
Luca’s security team stormed the building.
The captured man bit down hard.
His body convulsed.
Claire dropped beside him.
“What did he take?”
Luca forced his jaw open.
A broken capsule rested beneath his tongue.
Poison.
The attacker’s eyes rolled backward.
Claire checked his pulse.
“He is alive.”
“Barely.”
Paramedics carried him away.
The second shooter escaped through the basement.
Police found a stolen sedan abandoned three blocks away.
Detective Pierce did not return.
Claire, Sophie, Mrs. Alvarez, and Adrian were moved to a secure Ashford property near Lake Michigan.
Claire hated every mile of the drive.
The mansion was hidden behind stone walls and iron gates.
Security cameras covered every entrance.
Adrian’s staff prepared a bedroom for Sophie.
The little girl refused to sleep unless Claire stayed beside her.
Claire lay next to her until Sophie’s breathing became steady.
Then she found Adrian in the library.
Key 214 rested on the desk.
“What does it open?”
“We traced the manufacturer.”
“And?”
“It belongs to a private locker system beneath Union Station.”
Claire folded her arms.
“You investigated without me.”
“You were helping your daughter sleep.”
“That is not permission.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I am trying to keep you alive.”
“Your mother tried to hurt my daughter.”
“Do not confuse me with her.”
“You share a house.”
“I have not lived with Victoria since I was eighteen.”
“You still protected her reputation.”
His jaw tightened.
“I did not know what she had done.”
“You saw her grab Sophie.”
“I saw it too late.”
“Everyone in that ballroom saw it too late.”
Adrian looked away.
Claire’s voice softened slightly.
“You were on the balcony.”
“You had a clear view.”
“I was watching my grandmother.”
“Why?”
“Because she had not attended a public event in six years.”
“She was frightened.”
“Of the crowd?”
“Of my mother.”
Claire became quiet.
Adrian opened a drawer.
He removed a medical file.
“My grandmother has suffered three falls in five years.”
“Each happened after she argued with Victoria.”
Claire read the first page.
The falls were blamed on Eleanor’s age.
One occurred near a staircase.
Another in a locked bathroom.
The third beside the indoor pool.
“You think Victoria hurt her.”
“I think fear can make someone fall.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only one I have evidence for.”
Claire placed the file down.
“Then let us find evidence.”
They entered Union Station before dawn.
Luca brought four security officers.
No police were informed.
Locker 214 was located beneath an abandoned baggage corridor.
The brass key turned.
Inside sat a red metal box.
Claire removed it.
A photograph rested on top.
Catherine Bennett stood beside a hospital bed.
Eleanor Ashford lay unconscious beneath white sheets.
A date was stamped across the corner.
Two days after Catherine’s supposed death.
Claire’s knees weakened.
“My mother was alive.”
Adrian caught her arm.
Claire pulled away.
She opened the box.
Letters filled the inside.
Every envelope was addressed to Eleanor.
None had been opened.
Catherine had written them over twelve years.
Claire unfolded the first letter.
Mom,
I am alive.
Victoria arranged the fire.
Thomas got Claire out.
We cannot return until we prove what she did.
The police are protecting her.
Claire stopped reading.
Adrian took the next letter.
Victoria knows Catherine is alive.
She has Malcolm moving money from the trust.
She says Claire must never be recognized as an Ashford.
Another letter contained a list of bank accounts.
Another mentioned Detective Nolan Pierce.
The final envelope had never been sealed.
The page inside contained only two sentences.
Thomas is dead.
Victoria knows where Sophie will be born.
Claire looked up.
“Sophie was not born until years later.”
Adrian examined the date.
“This letter was written eight years before her birth.”
“That is impossible.”
Luca searched the red box.
He found a cassette recorder beneath the letters.
Claire pressed play.
Static filled the tunnel.
Then Catherine’s voice spoke.
“If Claire hears this, Victoria has already found us.”
“Your daughter will carry the same crescent mark.”
“It does not come from our blood.”
“It was made.”
Claire stopped the recording.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian looked toward Sophie.
The little girl stood beside Luca.
Her pink stuffed rabbit was pressed against her chest.
A red laser dot appeared on the wall behind her.
Luca saw it first.
“Down!”
He tackled Sophie as a shot tore through the locker door.
The underground lights exploded.
Darkness swallowed the corridor.
Claire screamed her daughter’s name.
Sophie answered from the floor.
“I’m here!”
Adrian shielded them.
Luca fired toward the far tunnel.
Footsteps retreated.
Then a timer began beeping inside the red metal box.
Adrian grabbed it.
“Run.”
Claire lifted Sophie.
They sprinted through the tunnel.
The explosion struck before they reached the stairs.
The force threw them forward.
Dust and metal filled the air.
Claire landed with Sophie beneath her.
Adrian hit the ground beside them.
The ceiling began collapsing.
Luca shouted from the smoke.
“The letters!”
Claire looked back.
Flames consumed the open locker.
Catherine’s words disappeared inside them.
Then Sophie opened her stuffed rabbit.
One letter rested inside.
She had taken it before the explosion.
Claire unfolded the page.
A hospital address had been written at the bottom.
ST. AGNES LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY.
PATIENT NAME: ANNA BELL.

Beneath it, Catherine had written one final warning.
VICTORIA VISITS ME EVERY MONTH.
