CHAPTER 3: THE PEOPLE WHO SHOWED UP
Before I could reach the front door to leave, headlights swept across the living room wall—one car, then another, then a third. My mother’s expression faltered. Audrey’s wine glass tilted, red liquid spilling over her hand.
The door opened and Captain Elena stepped inside, uniform crisp and steady. Behind her came Detective Marcus Harris, Naomi Price the attorney I’d called the night before, two military police officers, and a social worker from child protective services. Marta, our housekeeper for twelve years, followed close behind, her hands folded tight in her lap.
Audrey stumbled back, the glass slipping from her fingers and shattering on the floor. My mother stood frozen, the mask of control she’d worn for so long finally cracking.
“This isn’t a family argument,” Detective Harris said calmly, kneeling beside Sophia to examine her wrists. “This is assault, false imprisonment, and child endangerment. No one moves.”
The paramedics who’d come with them moved fast, checking Leo’s pulse, calling out numbers to one another. “104.2,” one said, his tone grave. “Severe dehydration. He’s been running this fever for at least thirty-six hours without treatment.”
Naomi laid her folder on the table and opened it. “We have call logs showing your calls to the clinic were blocked before they connected. We have location data showing your car was locked in the garage for ten days. We have the emails you sent your father. And we have Marta’s statement.”
Marta stepped forward, her voice trembling but clear. “She poured the medicine down the sink right in front of me. Locked the door when Mrs. Hayes tried to carry the baby out. I was scared to say anything—she would have ruined me too.”
She pulled out her phone and showed photos: Sophia’s bruised wrists, the empty medicine bottle by the drain, the baby monitor turned face down.
My mother looked at me, her eyes wide and desperate. “I only did it because I love you.”
“You love control,” I said quietly. “There’s a difference.”
