CHAPTER 17: THE BOX AND THE LESSONS

A lawyer sent me a box Eleanor had left—old toys, report cards, the drawing I’d made her for Mother’s Day at six. Tucked inside was one last note: I hope you raise your son better than I raised mine.
I put it in Leo’s closet. One day he can decide what it means to him. Audrey graduated nursing school and took a job caring for the elderly. “I want to learn how to help instead of hurting,” she said.
