CHAPTER 3: THE FALL OF A KING
CHAPTER 3: THE FALL OF A KING
"What are you talking about?"
Richard's voice cracked.
The board member opened the folder.
Invoices.
Wire transfers.
Contracts.
Dozens of them.
"I've been investigating for six months."
The room fell silent.
Richard's hands shook.
"This is ridiculous."
The board member ignored him.
"Millions of dollars were redirected through shell companies."
Another director spoke.
"We didn't know who was responsible."
Then he looked directly at Richard.
"Until now."
Richard stood up.
"You can't prove anything."
"Actually, we can."
The door opened.
Two federal investigators walked inside.
Richard stopped talking.
The color drained from his face.
One investigator placed a badge on the table.
"We'd like to ask some questions."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The mighty Richard Kane looked smaller than I'd ever seen him.
For years he ruled through fear.
For years he humiliated people.
For years everyone protected him.
Now nobody was protecting him.
Jake.
Sarah.
The executives.
The board.
Not one person spoke in his defense.
Because they all knew.
The king was finished.
Richard slowly looked at me.
"This was your doing."
I laughed.
"You think I planned federal investigators?"
His jaw tightened.
"You ruined me."
I stood.
"No."
The room watched.
"You ruined yourself."
Silence.
Richard had no answer.
Because he knew I was right.
The investigators escorted him out.
Just like security had escorted countless employees out before.
Just like he tried to do to me.
The door closed behind him.
And just like that...
He was gone.
Three months later, Kane Technologies looked completely different.
Profits were up.
Employee turnover was down.
People actually smiled at work.
Crazy concept.
I promoted talented employees.
Removed toxic managers.
Created profit-sharing programs.
For the first time, people felt valued.
One afternoon, Jake knocked on my office door.
"Got a minute?"
"Sure."
He stepped inside.
"I owe you an apology."
I raised an eyebrow.
"For what?"
"Not standing up for you."
I appreciated the honesty.
Most people wouldn't admit it.
"It's okay."
"No."
He shook his head.
"It wasn't."
After a moment, I smiled.
"Then let's do better moving forward."
He smiled back.
"Deal."
As he left, I looked out the window.
The city stretched below.
Three days.
That's all it took.
Three days to go from fired employee...
To company owner.
Three days to watch karma arrive with perfect timing.
My phone buzzed.
A news alert appeared.
Former CEO Richard Kane officially charged with fraud.
I stared at it.
Then quietly deleted the notification.
Because Richard was no longer my problem.
The company was thriving.
The people were thriving.
And for the first time in years...
So was I.
Sometimes life doesn't give you justice.
Sometimes the bad guy wins.
But every now and then...
The person who tells you you're replaceable discovers something important.
The truth is:
May you like
Nobody is untouchable.
And karma always knows the address.
