CHAPTER 9 THE FINAL WAR OF THE MONTROSE AND CROSS EMPIRES

The farmhouse was silent.

Too silent.

The kind of silence that comes before something breaks.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

Twenty years of secrets.

Twenty years of lies.

Twenty years of destruction.

And somehow...

He still looked confident.

---

"Give me the flash drive, Isabella."

His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

Like he was asking for a favor.

I looked at him.

"The funny thing about you, Adrian..."

"What?"

"You still think you can order people around."

---

Vanessa laughed.

"You really think you're in control?"

I turned toward her.

The woman who had spent weeks destroying my reputation.

The woman who believed she had finally defeated me.

"You know what your biggest mistake was, Vanessa?"

She frowned.

"What?"

"You thought power came from making people afraid of you."

I stepped closer.

"Real power comes from having nothing left to lose."

---

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Enough."

He looked at the men behind him.

"Take the drive."

But nobody moved.

---

Because before anyone could take a step...

The sound of police sirens filled the night.

Everyone froze.

---

Vanessa looked confused.

"What did you do?"

I smiled.

"You should have checked who was watching."

---

Damian stepped forward.

While Adrian was busy talking...

Damian had activated the emergency signal on his phone.

A signal connected directly to federal investigators.

---

Adrian looked at him.

"You betrayed your own family."

Damian's expression was cold.

"No."

"I stopped protecting people who never deserved it."

---

The farmhouse doors opened.

Federal agents entered.

"Nobody move!"

---

For the first time...

Adrian looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

---

But then...

He smiled.

A small smile.

The same smile he had worn for years.

Because he still believed he had one final move.

"You think you won?"

Everyone stopped.

Adrian looked at me.

"You still don't know the whole truth."

---

I stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

He laughed.

"Ask your mother."

---

I turned.

My mother looked away.

My heart sank.

"Mom?"

She didn't answer.

---

Adrian smiled.

"Tell her."

"Tell her why you really disappeared."

---

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"I was protecting you."

"From what?"

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

"From your grandfather."

---

The room froze.

"My grandfather?"

She nodded.

"Your grandfather created the original agreement between the families."

"But he wasn't trying to protect anyone."

"He was trying to control everything."

---

My mother continued.

"He believed power should stay in one bloodline."

"He created a plan."

"A plan where Montrose, Cross, and Hale would eventually merge."

---

I felt sick.

"Through marriage."

My mother nodded.

"Yes."

---

Damian looked at me.

The realization hit both of us.

Our marriage.

The reason our families crossed paths.

The reason we were pushed together.

It wasn't just business.

It was planned decades ago.

---

Adrian laughed.

"Exactly."

"You weren't a love story."

"You were an investment."

---

The words hurt.

Even after everything.

Because some wounds never fully heal.

---

Then Damian stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

He shook his head.

"They planned our marriage."

"But they didn't control what happened after."

---

Adrian frowned.

"What are you saying?"

Damian looked at me.

And for the first time...

There was no fear.

No lies.

Only honesty.

"I'm saying they didn't create what Isabella and I built."

"They didn't create our feelings."

"They didn't create our choices."

---

I looked at him.

And I realized something.

The beginning of our marriage may have been a lie.

But every moment after...

Was ours.

---

Adrian became furious.

"You are nothing without your families."

Damian smiled slightly.

"Maybe."

"But at least we know who we are."

---

The agents moved closer.

"Adrian Montrose, you are under arrest."

---

But before they could handcuff him...

Adrian pulled out a small device.

A remote.

Everyone froze.

---

"What is that?"

My voice tightened.

He smiled.

"The final insurance."

---

The screen on his device turned on.

A countdown appeared.

05:00

---

Vanessa's face went pale.

"What did you do?"

Adrian looked at her.

"You were always so desperate for power."

"Did you really think I would let you have it?"

---

The countdown continued.

04:32.

---

Damian looked at the device.

"What's happening?"

Adrian laughed.

"The Montrose archives."

"The Cross financial systems."

"Everything."

---

My blood ran cold.

"You planted a virus."

"Not a virus."

He smiled.

"A reset."

---

"If I press this button..."

"Every record disappears."

"Every account."

"Every contract."

"Every piece of evidence."

---

Vanessa stepped back.

"You said we would win."

Adrian looked at her.

"I said what you needed to hear."

---

The truth hit her.

She was never his partner.

She was just another tool.

---

I looked at the countdown.

Three minutes.

Two families.

A lifetime of secrets.

Everything could disappear.

---

Then I remembered something.

The flash drive.

The evidence.

The original files.

But Adrian smiled.

"You think that saves you?"

He shook his head.

"The drive contains only copies."

---

I looked at him.

"No."

He froze.

Because he saw my expression.

I wasn't scared.

---

"You made one mistake."

I said.

"You spent twenty years believing everyone was as selfish as you."

---

I held up my phone.

On the screen...

A live upload.

---

Adrian's face changed.

"What did you do?"

I smiled.

"While you were busy explaining your victory..."

"I uploaded everything."

---

The files.

The recordings.

The documents.

The evidence.

Already sent.

Already copied.

Already everywhere.

---

The countdown reached:

00:10

00:09

00:08

---

Adrian pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

---

Because the system was already locked.

---

00:00.

Silence.

---

The empire Adrian spent his life building...

Was gone.

Not because someone destroyed it.

Because the truth finally reached everyone.

---

As the agents took Adrian away...

He looked at me.

"You think this is over?"

I stared back.

"No."

A pause.

"It's finally over."

---

Months later...

The world learned the truth.

The Montrose.

The Cross.

The Hale family.

Everything was exposed.

The businesses were rebuilt.

Not on lies.

Not on manipulation.

But on honesty.

---

But one final question remained.

Could Damian and I rebuild what was broken?

Could a marriage born from a lie survive after everything?

---

The answer would come at the same place where everything started.

The Cross mansion.

The place where he slapped me.

The place where he ordered me to kneel.

The place where he thought I was powerless.

---

One year later...

I stood in the same marble foyer.

But this time...

I wasn't leaving.

I was standing there because I chose to.

---

Damian walked toward me.

No arrogance.

No pride.

Just honesty.

"I owe you an apology."

I smiled slightly.

"You owe me more than one."

He nodded.

"I know."

---

Then he did something I never expected.

He dropped to one knee.

Not because I demanded it.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he finally understood.

---

"Isabella Montrose..."

"Will you give me another chance?"

---

I looked at the man who broke my heart.

The man who also helped save it.

And after everything...

I knew forgiveness wasn't forgetting.

It was choosing what came next.

---

I reached out my hand.

"One chance."

He smiled.

"I'll spend my life earning it."

---

Behind us...

The mansion was still the same.

The marble.

The lights.

The luxury.

But the meaning had changed.

Because now...

Nobody owned me.

Nobody controlled me.

Nobody could make me kneel.

---

And the greatest revenge wasn't destroying Damian Cross.

It wasn't taking back the empire.

It wasn't watching my enemies fall.

---

May you like

The greatest revenge...

Was becoming the woman they never believed I could be.
