CHAPTER 5 THE MARRIAGE THAT WAS NEVER AN ACCIDENT

The document felt heavier than it should have.

It was only a few pages.

A few signatures.

A few lines of black ink.

But in my hands...

It felt like the weight of four years of my life.

I stared at Damian Cross's signature.

My fingers went cold.

Because I knew that signature.

I had seen it thousands of times.

Contracts.

Business agreements.

Birthday cards.

Love letters.

But this document was different.

This wasn't a business deal.

It was a plan.

---

"Tell me I'm wrong."

My voice barely came out.

I looked at Adrian.

"Tell me this is fake."

My uncle didn't answer immediately.

And that silence told me everything.

---

Vanessa leaned against the table, enjoying every second.

"You still don't understand, do you?"

I looked at her.

"Understand what?"

She smiled.

"That you were never the person in control."

The words cut deeper than I wanted to admit.

---

Adrian opened the file.

"Four years ago, before you met Damian, the Cross family discovered something."

"What?"

"They discovered that Montrose Global was planning a major expansion into international shipping."

I frowned.

"That has nothing to do with marriage."

Adrian looked at me.

"It does when your family controls billions of dollars in assets."

---

The next page showed a private agreement.

A meeting between Damian and his father.

The date was two months before Damian and I met.

The title made my stomach turn.

MARRIAGE STRATEGY AGREEMENT

---

I read the first line.

"Damian Cross will establish a personal relationship with Isabella Montrose to gain access to Montrose financial networks..."

I stopped.

I couldn't breathe.

---

No.

Not Damian.

Not the man who held me when I cried.

Not the man who promised he would protect me.

Not the man who told me I was the only person who ever understood him.

---

"He used me."

The words escaped before I realized I said them.

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

---

Vanessa smiled.

"And you thought you were the genius hiding your identity."

She laughed.

"The funny thing is..."

"You both lied to each other."

---

I turned toward her.

"What does that mean?"

Her smile faded slightly.

"Damian knew you were Isabella Montrose."

"But you never told him why you married him."

Silence.

Because she was right.

I had secrets too.

---

Four years earlier...

I didn't marry Damian because I trusted him.

At least...

Not at first.

I married him because I needed to find out the truth.

My father's company had almost collapsed after a suspicious business deal with Cross Holdings.

The documents disappeared.

The evidence vanished.

And the only person who knew what happened...

Was Damian Cross.

---

I entered his world because I wanted answers.

But somewhere along the way...

Something unexpected happened.

I fell in love.

I forgot the mission.

I forgot the investigation.

I forgot I was supposed to be watching him.

Because Damian became the person I wanted to believe he was.

---

But now...

Standing in that abandoned hotel...

I realized something painful.

Maybe we were both pretending.

Maybe our entire marriage started with a lie.

---

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

From Damian.

"Please talk to me."

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

"I know about the document."

My heart stopped.

A third message.

"I can explain."

---

I looked at Adrian.

"How does he know?"

Adrian smiled.

"Because he knew this day would come."

---

I left immediately.

I didn't know what I was feeling.

Anger.

Pain.

Confusion.

Maybe all three.

---

When I arrived at the Montrose Tower...

Damian was waiting outside my office.

No bodyguards.

No arrogance.

No confidence.

Just a man who looked like he had finally lost everything.

---

"Isabella."

I walked past him.

He grabbed my wrist.

Not hard.

Just enough to stop me.

"Please."

I looked at his hand.

He immediately let go.

The fear in his eyes was something I had never seen before.

---

"Tell me the truth."

I said.

"Was any of it real?"

Damian looked down.

For a long time...

He said nothing.

Then finally:

"Yes."

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

"How can I believe that?"

"Because the plan was real."

His honesty surprised me.

"But my feelings weren't."

---

I stared at him.

"Then why?"

"Why marry me?"

Damian closed his eyes.

"Because my father forced me."

"Because he threatened to destroy me if I refused."

"Because he said Montrose was the only thing standing between our family and bankruptcy."

---

I shook my head.

"And you just agreed?"

"No."

His voice cracked.

"I planned to expose them."

"What?"

"I found out my father and your uncle were working together."

---

I froze.

"My uncle?"

Damian nodded.

"Adrian Montrose wasn't a victim."

"He was the person who created the conflict between our families."

---

The room went silent.

Everything changed again.

Adrian wasn't here to reveal the truth.

He was here to rewrite it.

---

Damian continued.

"Your uncle wanted both families weakened."

"He wanted Cross Holdings and Montrose Global to destroy each other."

"Then he would take control."

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Damian looked away.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"That if I told you the truth..."

"I would lose you."

---

For a moment...

I saw the man I loved.

Not the billionaire.

Not the Cross heir.

Just Damian.

The man who was scared.

The man who made mistakes.

The man who hurt me.

---

Then my phone rang.

My father's name appeared.

I answered immediately.

"Isabella."

His voice was urgent.

"Don't trust Adrian."

I froze.

"What happened?"

A pause.

Then:

"He was never trying to expose the truth."

"He was trying to erase everyone who knew it."

---

Before I could respond...

The lights in the building went out.

Every screen in the office turned black.

Then one message appeared.

A live broadcast.

Adrian Montrose appeared on every monitor.

Smiling.

---

"Good evening."

"Tonight, I will reveal the biggest fraud in American business history."

He paused.

"And the person responsible..."

"Is my niece."

---

My blood turned cold.

Because Adrian wasn't running away.

He was attacking.

May you like

And this time...

His target was me.
