CHAPTER 1 THE SLAP THAT ENDED THEIR EMPIRE

THE BILLIONAIRE WIFE THEY HUMILIATED — UNTIL SHE TOOK BACK EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 1 THE SLAP THAT ENDED THEIR EMPIRE

The sound of the slap echoed through the marble mansion like a gunshot.

For a few seconds...

Nobody breathed.

The music stopped.

The servants froze.

The guests who had been laughing moments earlier suddenly looked at the floor.

Because everyone knew they had just witnessed something they were never supposed to see.

A husband hitting his wife.

And not just any husband.

Damian Cross.

The golden son of one of America's most powerful families.

The man who appeared on magazine covers.

The man investors trusted.

The man everyone believed was untouchable.

And standing in front of him...

Was me.

Isabella Montrose.

His wife of four years.

My cheek burned.

But the pain wasn't what hurt.

What hurt was the look in his eyes.

There was no regret.

No shock.

No shame.

Only satisfaction.

Like he had finally shown everyone where I belonged.

"Damian..."

My voice was quiet.

Almost a whisper.

"Did you really just hit me?"

His jaw tightened.

"You should be asking yourself why you pushed my mother too far."

I looked at Evelyn Cross.

My mother-in-law.

She stood near the fireplace holding an empty emerald jewelry box.

A perfect picture of fake sadness.

"My grandmother's necklace is gone," she announced.

Her voice trembled perfectly.

"That necklace has been in our family for eighty years."

She looked directly at me.

"And now it's missing."

Everyone understood what she was saying.

She didn't need to say the word.

Thief.

"I didn't take it."

I said it calmly.

But Damian's face changed.

"You expect us to believe that?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because it's the truth."

A few guests whispered.

Evelyn smiled.

That cruel little smile I had seen hundreds of times.

"You know, Damian..."

She shook her head sadly.

"Some people can wear expensive clothes, live in beautiful homes..."

"But they never truly change."

My hands curled into fists.

There it was.

Again.

The same insult.

The same reminder.

That no matter how much I achieved...

They still saw me as the poor girl from nowhere.

Vanessa Hale stepped closer.

His mistress.

The woman wearing the red dress that cost more than most people's yearly salary.

She wrapped her arm around Damian.

"Sweetheart, don't let her ruin your birthday."

Then she looked at me.

"Some people don't appreciate what they're given."

I stared at her.

Four years ago...

She was nobody to me.

Now she stood in my home pretending she belonged there.

"You know what the saddest part is?" Vanessa whispered.

"You actually believed you became one of us."

The room laughed.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Because everyone wanted to stay on Damian's good side.

I looked around.

At every person smiling.

Every person pretending not to see what was happening.

And something inside me changed.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something colder.

I was done.

Damian stepped closer.

His voice lowered.

"Apologize to my mother."

I said nothing.

"Kneel."

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

He pointed toward the floor.

"Admit you stole the necklace."

"Apologize."

"Then leave."

For four years...

I had protected this man.

I had saved his company.

I had fixed his mistakes.

I had negotiated deals when his executives were ready to walk away.

I had cleaned up scandals before they became headlines.

And tonight...

He wanted me on my knees.

I slowly bent down.

Everyone smiled.

They thought I was surrendering.

But I wasn't.

I picked up my old brown leather purse.

The same purse Evelyn mocked every time she saw it.

"The poor girl still carries that thing?"

I remembered her saying.

I stood.

Looked at Damian.

And smiled.

"Enjoy tonight."

He frowned.

"What?"

"Because tomorrow morning..."

I walked toward the door.

"...you'll finally understand who you married."

Everyone laughed.

Damian laughed the loudest.

"You've lost your mind."

I opened the door.

The cold night air hit my face.

Then I said:

"Oh, Damian."

"One more thing."

I turned slightly.

"Everything you think you own..."

"You borrowed from me."

The laughter exploded behind me.

But I didn't care.

Because they didn't know.

They never knew.

My real name.

My real family.

My real power.

The moment I stepped through the gates...

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom stopped in front of me.

The driver immediately opened the door.

"Ms. Montrose."

I entered.

The man inside handed me a phone.

"Your father is waiting."

"Legal team is prepared."

"Montrose Global has activated every emergency protocol."

I looked back at the mansion.

The place where they had humiliated me.

The place where they believed I was nothing.

Then I spoke.

"Execute Phase One."

The man nodded.

"Yes, Ms. Montrose."

I looked out the window.

"Freeze every Cross account."

A pause.

"Effective immediately."

Thirty minutes later...

Damian Cross was still laughing.

Until his phone rang.

He answered casually.

"Hello?"

His expression changed.

"What?"

Another call.

Then another.

His CFO.

His lawyers.

His bank.

One by one.

Everyone started calling.

And every conversation ended with the same sentence.

"Your accounts have been frozen."

Damian slowly looked toward the door.

The door I had walked through.

The door he thought meant I was leaving forever.

But the truth was...

May you like

I wasn't leaving.

I was taking everything back.
