Chapter 25: The Viper’s Nest

The New York Public Library was transformed into a playground for the corrupt and the elite. Chandeliers dripped with crystals, Champagne flowed like rivers, and string quartets played Mozart over the low hum of dangerous deals.
Eleanor moved through the crowd like a panther. Her black velvet gown swept across the marble floors, hiding the ceramic blades strapped to her thighs. Her diamond mask obscured her features, but her posture commanded absolute attention.
"Comms check," Julian’s voice crackled quietly in her custom earpiece. "I have eyes on the second-floor balcony. Sterling is holding court."
"I see him," Eleanor whispered, accepting a flute of Champagne from a passing waiter.
Victor Sterling was a tall man with silver hair and eyes like polished granite. He wore a white tuxedo, looking every inch the benevolent billionaire. But Eleanor saw the cold calculation in his movements.
She drifted toward the sweeping staircase, allowing the crowd to part for her. When she reached the top, she deliberately bumped into a man in a wolf mask, spilling her Champagne onto his sleeve.
"My deepest apologies," Eleanor purred in a flawless French accent.
Sterling turned, his eyes locking onto hers. For a moment, the world stopped. A flicker of recognition crossed his face, followed instantly by a predatory smile.
"No harm done, Countess," Sterling said smoothly, dismissing the wolf-masked man with a wave of his hand. "Though I must admit, I know every face in New York, and yours is a delightful mystery."
"I find mysteries are more profitable than truths, Mr. Sterling," she replied, matching his gaze.
"Walk with me," he offered, gesturing to the rare books corridor.
As they stepped into the dimly lit hallway, the heavy oak doors shut behind them, silencing the orchestra. Eleanor reached for the hairpin, ready to end it right here.
But Sterling was faster. He pressed a button on his watch, and the corridor plunged into red emergency lighting. Thick steel shutters slammed down over the windows.
"Julian!" Eleanor hissed.
"I'm blind, El! The shutters—" Static swallowed his voice.
Sterling chuckled, turning to face her. He didn't look afraid; he looked entertained. "You think a mask could hide you from me, Eleanor? I knew you were coming the moment you activated that forged alias. Welcome to the trap."

From the shadows of the bookshelves stepped three women in sleek black dresses, identical silver masks covering their faces. They weren't socialites; the way they moved spoke of intensive martial arts training.
"Kill her," Sterling ordered calmly, walking toward a private elevator. "But don't damage the face. I want to send it to her son."
