Chapter 18 - The Viper's Gala

Chapter 18 - The Viper's Gala

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was bathed in the blinding flash of a thousand paparazzi cameras. The annual Gala was a collision of high fashion, immense wealth, and veiled corruption. The theme of the night was Gods and Monsters, a fitting irony that was not lost on Eleanor as she stepped out of the black Maybach.

She wore a custom crimson gown that looked like liquid fire, the silk wrapping around her like the wings of a phoenix. Diamonds rested at her throat—a stark, beautiful juxtaposition to the violence of the night before. Julian walked a half-step behind her, clad in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo. He looked impossibly handsome, yet to the trained eye, every movement he made was a calculation of vectors, threat assessments, and escape routes.

They ascended the grand stairs. The elite of New York parted for them, whispers rippling through the crowd. Eleanor Sterling. They thought she had abandoned this world, but here she was, commanding the red carpet with a terrifying grace.

Inside the grand hall, surrounded by ancient Egyptian artifacts and modern vanity, Eleanor spotted him.

Elias Thorne was holding court near the Temple of Dendur. He was impeccably dressed, radiating the effortless charm of a man who believed he owned the world. Surrounding him were politicians, tech CEOs, and socialites—all dancing to his tune.

"Stay on comms," Eleanor whispered to Julian without moving her lips. "Silas, are you in the system?"

"I’m in, boss," Silas’s voice crackled in her earpiece from a van parked three blocks away. "Waiting for your signal to initiate the financial wipe."

Eleanor glided across the room, cutting through the crowd until she stood directly in front of Thorne. The sycophants surrounding him fell silent, sensing the sudden drop in temperature.

"Eleanor Sterling," Thorne smiled, extending a hand holding a crystal coupe of champagne. "I must say, I am surprised to see you. I heard your beautiful home in Malibu had a severe pest problem recently. A tragedy."

Eleanor didn't take the glass. She met his gaze, her eyes devoid of any fear. "We exterminated them, Elias. They were surprisingly fragile. I hope the company you hired offers refunds for failed operations."

Thorne’s smile tightened. He gestured for his entourage to give them space. Once they were alone, the charming mask slipped, revealing the ruthless predator underneath.

"You are playing a game designed by gods, little girl," Thorne hissed, leaning in closer. "You think dismantling Victoria Vance makes you a player? You are holding my money. The Sterling ledger belongs to me. Give it to me tonight, or I swear to God, I will turn your son into an orphan."

Julian immediately stepped forward, his body language shifting into lethal aggression. The air around them seemed to freeze. Thorne's hidden bodyguards, disguised as guests, subtly reached into their tailored jackets.

Eleanor calmly raised a hand and placed it flat against Julian’s chest, stopping him. She didn't look at Julian; she kept her dead, unblinking stare on Thorne.

She let out a soft, chilling laugh.

"You misunderstand our dynamic, Elias," Eleanor whispered, her voice slicing through the classical music playing in the background. "Julian isn't my protector. He's my leash. And you just forced me to unclip it."

Thorne’s eyes flickered with a split-second of genuine hesitation.

"Silas," Eleanor said aloud, not caring who heard. "Execute Phase One."

"Executing," the voice in her ear confirmed.

In that exact moment, across the world, Silas and his team bypassed Thorne’s security protocols—using the access codes they had squeezed from Marcus—and systematically began draining Thorne’s offshore, untraceable accounts. Billions of dollars, the lifeblood of Thorne's shadow empire, were being transferred and dispersed into thousands of anonymous micro-charities across the globe.

Thorne’s smartwatch vibrated. He glanced down. Then his personal phone buzzed. Then the phones of his three chief financial officers standing across the room began to ring simultaneously.

Thorne looked back up at Eleanor, the color draining from his face as he realized what she had just done. She hadn't come here to negotiate. She had come to strip him of his armor.

"I am going to destroy you," Thorne whispered, his voice trembling with absolute rage.

May you like

"You can try," Eleanor smiled, turning her back on him. She took Julian’s arm, projecting absolute dominance. "But you’re broke now, Elias. And without money, monsters are just men."

As Eleanor and Julian walked out of the gala, the chaos behind them erupted, leaving the ashes of Thorne's empire smoldering in their wake.
