Chapter 16 - THE MOTHER WHO WASN'T GONE

Sebastian’s mother, Celeste Calder, lived in Palm Beach.
At least that was what everyone believed.
She had not attended the gala.
She rarely attended anything.
Sebastian stared at the detective as though he had spoken the wrong language.
“My mother has dementia.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice was barely audible.
Sebastian turned.
“What?”
“She has memory problems.”
Evelyn swallowed.
“But not the way Martin told you.”
Sebastian stepped back.
The betrayal was becoming too large for one person to hold.
Martin had controlled access to Celeste for years.
Medical updates came through him.
Financial decisions came through him.
Sebastian visited, but always with staff arranged by Martin’s office.
“What are you saying?”
Evelyn answered.
“Your mother knew Caroline was investigating Martin.”
“Was she involved?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel did.
At the hospital, bruised but alive, he told detectives Celeste had been sending Lucia money for years.
Not to hurt Sofia.
To hide her.
That changed everything again.
Celeste had secretly funded the protected home where Sofia lived.
Martin discovered it months earlier.
He replaced staff.
Took control.
Daniel learned the truth only after he filed for Lily.
He had thought the trust was money.
He had not understood it was also evidence.
“I was greedy,” he told me.
We were separated by a hospital room.
Two officers stood outside.
“I wanted the trust.”
“You wanted my daughter.”
“I wanted what came with her.”
“That is worse.”
He nodded.
No excuses.
Then he looked at Lily’s photograph on my phone.
“I’m withdrawing the custody case.”
“You think that fixes it?”
“No.”
“Good.”
He started crying.
“I saw what they did to Sofia.”
“Too late.”
“I know.”
He told me Veronica had not planned to hurt Lily.
She had planned to create a scene.
But Lucia had ordered the camera reset.
Martin had ordered Daniel to be present.
Every person did one small ugly thing.
Together, they built something monstrous.
Then Daniel gave us the last thing he had.
A password.
Veronica’s cloud archive.
Police found financial records.
Payments from Martin.
Payments from Lucia.
Payments from a Calder family account controlled by Celeste.
Sebastian stared at his mother’s name.
Then one memo line caught Evelyn’s attention.
C. PROTECTION - S.
Not payment for the scheme.
Protection for Sofia.
Celeste may have been trying to keep the child alive.
Sebastian booked a flight to Florida.
Then canceled it.
He looked at me.
“I keep running toward the next answer.”
“Yes.”
“I should wait for facts.”
“Yes.”
He exhaled.
“You enjoy this.”
“A little.”
For the first time in days, he smiled.
Then the police called.
Celeste Calder was not in Florida.
Her house had been empty for three weeks.
Martin had moved her.
May you like
And nobody knew where.
