Chapter 15 - THE FAMILY SECRET

Sebastian did not walk back into the ballroom.

He wanted to.

I could see it.

He wanted to drag Martin off the stage with his own hands.

Instead, he gave the recorder to the detective.

That choice may have saved everything.

Police needed authentication.

Context.

A lawful chain of custody.

Martin finished his speech to applause.

Then officers approached him.

His smile stayed in place.

Even when they asked him to come with them.

“This is absurd.”

Sebastian stood nearby.

Martin looked at him.

“Whatever you think you know, your father knew worse.”

Sebastian did not answer.

Martin’s smile sharpened.

“Ask Evelyn what Caroline was really doing that night.”

Then he left with police.

Sebastian turned toward Evelyn.

She had arrived minutes earlier.

Her face was pale.

“What did he mean?”

Evelyn said, “Not here.”

“Now.”

Sofia was taken to a protected room with a child advocate.

Elena waited outside.

She was shaking so hard Jasmine had to hold her hand.

Evelyn finally spoke.

Caroline had not merely discovered Sofia.

She had been preparing to expose Martin publicly.

On the night she died, she was carrying copies of financial records.

She planned to meet federal investigators.

“Did she?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Her car went off Lake Shore Drive before she reached them.”

Sebastian looked away.

Evelyn continued.

“Your father believed Martin arranged it.”

“Believed?”

“There was no proof.”

“Then what was File 17?”

“Caroline’s last phone call.”

Silence.

Sebastian stared at her.

“You heard it?”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“Your father made me swear.”

Sebastian laughed once.

It sounded empty.

“Everyone keeps protecting me by lying.”

I felt that sentence.

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“She called your father from the car.”

“What did she say?”

Evelyn looked toward the recorder in the detective’s evidence bag.

“She said Martin knew about Sofia.”

“What else?”

“She said someone was following her.”

Sebastian swallowed.

“And?”

“She said if she didn’t make it, tell Sebastian not to become like us.”

His face broke.

Not dramatically.

His eyes closed.

His shoulders lowered.

That was all.

I stepped beside him.

Did not touch him.

He reached for my hand anyway.

Across the hallway, a door opened.

Sofia came out with the advocate.

Elena stood.

Mother and daughter looked at each other for the first time in nine years.

Nobody moved.

Then Sofia whispered, “You look like me.”

Elena covered her mouth.

The child took one step.

Then another.

The reunion belonged to them.

So we looked away.

That was when a detective approached Sebastian.

“We found Daniel.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In the basement of Martin Calder’s foundation office.”

The detective paused.

“He says Martin wasn’t working alone.”

Sebastian’s eyes hardened.

“Who?”

The detective looked toward the ballroom.

May you like

“Your mother.”
