Chapter 12 - THE NAME SEBASTIAN RECOGNIZED

Martin Calder was chairman of the Calder family foundation.

He was also the man Sebastian called when his father died.

The man who had helped him take control of the restaurants.

The man who attended Caroline’s funeral and held Sebastian’s mother while she cried.

Sebastian read the letter twice.

Then said, “No.”

Not denial.

Warning.

Like the word itself could stop the past.

Evelyn Shaw met us at his penthouse.

When she saw Martin’s name, she closed her eyes.

“You knew.”

Sebastian’s voice was quiet.

Evelyn did not answer quickly enough.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You let him sit on my board.”

“I had no proof.”

“My sister had proof.”

“She had a theory.”

Sebastian turned away.

He looked like he wanted to break something.

Instead, he poured water.

That frightened me more.

Evelyn explained that Martin had helped Lucia’s family restructure the trust.

He received management fees.

Then consulting fees.

Then loans.

Millions moved through companies connected to him.

Caroline found the pattern.

Sebastian’s father confronted Martin.

After Caroline died, the investigation stopped.

“Why?”

“Your father was afraid.”

“My father was afraid of nobody.”

“He was afraid of losing you too.”

Sebastian said nothing.

I understood that kind of fear.

It makes intelligent people do stupid things.

It makes strong people hide.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

Court order or not, he had contacted me.

I almost deleted it.

Then I saw the photograph.

A little girl.

Ten years old.

Dark hair.

Daniel’s eyes.

SOFIA.

Under it:

MY MOTHER KNOWS YOU FOUND THE ARCHIVE. MARTIN IS MOVING HER TONIGHT.

I showed Sebastian.

He called the police.

Then Daniel called.

I answered on speaker.

“Maya, listen.”

“Where is Sofia?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then what do you know?”

“My mother and Martin have been talking all morning.”

“Why would Martin care?”

“Because the trust doesn’t just give Sofia money.”

Daniel’s voice shook.

“It gives her voting control over a company Martin has been using like his personal bank.”

Sebastian stared at Evelyn.

“What company?”

Daniel answered.

“Calder Hospitality Properties.”

Sebastian went completely still.

That company owned the land beneath six of his restaurants.

Martin did not merely have a connection to the trust.

He had built part of Sebastian’s empire on it.

Daniel continued.

“If Sofia appears, auditors appear.”

“And Lily?”

“Maya…”

“What about my daughter?”

“She was supposed to replace Sofia.”

“How?”

“If Sofia was declared legally unreachable and I obtained custody of Lily, the trust committee could recognize Lily as successor beneficiary.”

I felt sick.

“You wanted custody for money.”

“At first.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel whispered.

“I’m sorry.”

Then we heard a door slam on his end.

His breathing changed.

“Daniel?”

He whispered one sentence.

“They found me.”

May you like

The call went dead.
