CHAPTER 2 — THE BEST FRIEND

CHAPTER 2 — THE BEST FRIEND

Sarah didn’t sleep that night.

The message kept replaying in her mind.

“You’re relieved too early.”

At 2:13 AM, she checked Mark’s phone while he showered.

Nothing obvious.

Too clean.

Too perfect.

That made her more suspicious.

The next morning, she followed him again.

This time… no hospital.

A café downtown.

Mark sat down.

And then Sarah saw her.

Emma.

Her best friend.

Laughing.

Touching his arm.

Too familiar.

Sarah whispered, “No…”

She pulled out her phone and started recording.

Inside the café, Emma leaned closer.

“I can’t keep doing this in secret,” she said.

Mark grabbed her hand. “Just a little longer.”

Sarah dropped her phone slightly.

Her breathing shook.

So Lily wasn’t the affair.

But Emma was.

Her best friend.

Her husband.

For how long?

She pushed the door open.

The bell rang.

Both of them turned.

Emma went pale instantly.

“Sarah…”

Mark stood up fast. “Wait—let me explain.”

Sarah held up her phone. “Explain this?”

Emma started crying. “It’s not what you think…”

Sarah laughed coldly. “That’s my line now?”

Mark looked desperate. “We were going to tell you.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“Tell me what? That my husband and my best friend meet in cafés like teenagers behind my back?”

Emma whispered, “It started after your miscarriage…”

Sarah froze.

That wasn’t true.

She never had a miscarriage.

Or… did she?

Her memory flickered.

Something she buried.

Something she refused to think about.

Before she could speak—

Her phone buzzed again.

Unknown number:

“Ask them about 20 years ago.”

Sarah looked up slowly.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

And for the first time…

Mark looked terrified.
