CHAPTER 1 — THE TEST IN HIS JACKET
CHAPTER 1 — THE TEST IN HIS JACKET
Sarah wasn’t supposed to find it.
It slipped out when she was folding Mark’s jacket.
A pregnancy test.
Positive.
Her hands froze. “What… is this?”
Her stomach dropped immediately.
She wasn’t pregnant.
So who was?
When Mark came home, she said nothing. Just watched him. Quietly. Carefully.
That night, she followed him.
Rain started falling as his car stopped in front of a maternity clinic.
Sarah whispered, “Are you kidding me…”
Then she saw it.
Her younger sister—Lily—walking toward him.
Smiling.
Sarah’s chest tightened. “No… no way.”
She stepped out of the car.
“Mark!”
Both of them turned.
Lily went pale instantly. “Sarah—wait—this isn’t—”
“Don’t,” Sarah snapped. “Don’t lie to me in front of a hospital.”
Mark raised his hands. “It’s not what you think.”
Sarah laughed bitterly. “Oh really? My husband. My sister. A maternity clinic. What am I missing?”
Lily started crying. “Please… just listen—”
Sarah stepped closer. “You’re pregnant with my husband’s child, aren’t you?”
Silence.
Then Lily shook her head hard. “No. No, Sarah… I’m a surrogate.”
That word hit differently.
Mark sighed. “She’s telling the truth.”
Sarah blinked. “A surrogate… for who?”
Lily hesitated.
Mark answered quietly.
“For another couple.”
The rain got heavier.
Sarah stepped back, confused, embarrassed… and slowly relieved.
“I thought… I thought you were—”
“I know,” Mark said softly. “I should’ve told you.”
Sarah looked at her sister, still crying.
Then she whispered, “So there’s no affair?”
Lily shook her head. “No. I swear.”
For the first time that night, Sarah exhaled.
Maybe she was wrong.
Maybe everything was okay.
But as she turned to leave—
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
