CHAPTER 2: THE PRICE OF KINDNESS

Three days later, Olivia was fired.

Officially, it was because she had "violated safety procedures."

Unofficially?

A wealthy donor had complained about the broken glass.

Her manager wouldn't even look her in the eye.

"I'm sorry."

"No, you're not."

She walked out carrying a cardboard box containing everything she owned.

Twenty dollars in her bank account.

Two months behind on rent.

A sick mother at home.

Life couldn't get worse.

Or so she thought.

A black SUV pulled up beside her.

The window rolled down.

A deep voice spoke.

"Get in."

Olivia immediately recognized the man.

Harrison Blackwell.

She laughed.

"No."

The driver nearly choked.

People didn't say no to Harrison.

Ever.

A faint smile crossed Harrison's face.

"Please."

Olivia hesitated.

Then climbed in.

For the next hour, Harrison explained what nobody else knew.

The little boy she saved was his entire world.

His only son.

His reason for living.

"You saved my family."

"I saved a child."

"Exactly."

The next morning, Olivia received a job offer.

Salary: $250,000 a year.

Health insurance.

Housing allowance.

Education benefits.

She thought it was a joke.

May you like

It wasn't.

But accepting that offer would pull her into a world far more dangerous than she imagined.
