Chapter 15 - The Secret Julia Died Protecting

Margaret refused to speak until they returned to the estate.

She asked for the blue study.

Richard almost said no.

Then Anna reminded him that secrets had survived too long in locked rooms.

So they went together.

Richard.

Anna.

Margaret.

Vanessa stayed with detectives downstairs.

Leo slept in Anna's arms.

Margaret stood beside Julia's desk and looked at the wall where the hidden trust documents had been found.

"Your father built the company before you were born," she said.

Richard's expression hardened. "I know the family history."

"You know the version we published."

She opened a drawer and removed an old photograph Richard had missed.

His father, Charles Bennett, stood beside another man at a construction site.

A younger Nathan Cross stood behind them.

"That man was Miguel Morales," Margaret said.

Anna froze.

"My father?"

Margaret looked at her.

"Yes."

Anna's father had died when she was twelve. She knew he had worked construction. She had never known for whom.

"What does he have to do with this?"

Margaret's voice cracked.

"He discovered safety reports had been falsified on a Bennett development. A balcony collapsed. A child was permanently injured. Your father threatened to expose it."

Anna felt sick.

"And?"

"Charles paid the family. Then he paid your father to sign a confidentiality agreement."

"My father wouldn't."

"He didn't."

Margaret looked at Richard.

"Nathan handled the rest."

Anna's knees weakened.

"What does that mean?"

"Your father's death was ruled a workplace accident. Julia found the settlement files and realized Nathan had been cleaning up family problems for decades. Not just financial ones."

Richard stared at his mother.

"You knew?"

"I knew about the settlement. I did not know Nathan caused Miguel's accident until Julia confronted me."

Anna's eyes burned.

Julia had not chosen her randomly.

She had known exactly who Anna was.

"Why did Julia hire me?"

Margaret looked toward Leo.

"Because she wanted to make one thing right before she exposed everything."

Anna pressed a hand over her mouth.

Richard sat down heavily.

So that was Julia's backup plan.

Not merely a trusted nanny.

A woman whose family had already paid for the Bennetts' secrets once.

Nathan's confession and Julia's records broke the case open.

Within forty-eight hours, federal prosecutors charged Nathan with fraud, obstruction, conspiracy, and Julia's murder. Dr. Porter was arrested in Nevada. The missing security guard surrendered through an attorney.

Margaret resigned from the company board and entered a cooperation agreement. She was not forgiven. Richard told her that clearly.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to child endangerment, evidence tampering, and conspiracy charges tied to Nathan's guardianship scheme. Before officers took her away, she looked at Anna.

"I am sorry."

Anna did not say it was okay.

Because it wasn't.

"Tell Leo that when he's old enough to decide whether it matters."

Vanessa nodded and left.

Weeks later, the estate felt different.

Quieter.

The cameras had been replaced.

The blue study was no longer locked.

Richard turned Julia's desk into a place where Leo could draw while Anna sorted the boxes Julia had left behind.

One afternoon, Leo climbed into Richard's lap and pointed toward the foyer camera.

"Camera good?"

Richard smiled sadly.

"This one is."

Anna stood in the doorway.

For once, there was no fear in Leo's face.

Richard looked at her.

"Julia trusted you before I understood why."

Anna shook her head.

"She trusted the truth. She just needed someone who wouldn't look away."

Richard nodded.

That evening, Anna opened the last banker box from Unit 314.

Most of it contained duplicate financial records.

At the bottom was a sealed envelope.

ANNA MORALES.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a letter from Julia.

Anna read the first line.

If Nathan is gone and Richard finally knows the truth, there is one thing left I need you to understand about your father.

Anna stopped breathing.

The second line was worse.

Miguel Morales did not die in that accident.

Anna stared at the page.

Richard came to the doorway.

"What is it?"

She looked up at him.

Julia's final secret had just opened another door.

"My father might still be alive."
