Chapter 1 - The Camera Saw Everything

Anna heard the sound before she saw Leo.

A soft thump. Then another.

Then the terrified cry of a two-year-old tumbling down a staircase.

She dropped the laundry basket and ran.

Leo was halfway down the wide oak stairs, rolling toward the marble floor at the bottom. Anna reached him with less than a second to spare. She caught him against her chest, fell hard onto one knee, and twisted so his head never touched the floor.

Leo screamed and wrapped both arms around her neck.

"I've got you," Anna whispered, shaking almost as badly as he was. "I've got you, baby."

She looked up.

Vanessa stood at the top of the stairs.

Perfect hair. White blouse. One hand still resting on the railing.

For a moment, she did not move.

Then Anna saw Leo's wrist.

Four red marks were forming around it.

Anna's voice changed.

"What did you do?"

Vanessa's face sharpened. "Excuse me?"

"You pushed him."

"He slipped."

Leo buried his face against Anna's shoulder.

Vanessa came down two steps. "Give him to me."

Anna stood.

"No."

"Anna, I said give him to me."

"And I said no."

That was how Richard found them twenty minutes later: Anna holding his crying son in the foyer, Vanessa furious beside the stairs, and the house manager already calling the pediatrician.

Richard crossed the room so quickly he nearly dropped his keys.

"What happened?"

Vanessa answered first.

"Anna lost control of him. He slipped away from her near the stairs, and now she's trying to blame me."

Anna stared at her.

"You weren't even touching him when he fell," Vanessa continued. "I saw the whole thing."

"So did I," Anna said.

Richard looked from one woman to the other.

"Enough."

He crouched in front of Leo.

"Buddy, look at Daddy."

Leo's wet eyes lifted.

"Did you fall?"

Leo nodded.

"Did Anna hurt you?"

Vanessa sighed. "Richard, he's two. You can't interrogate him."

Leo suddenly raised one trembling hand.

Everyone went still.

He pointed toward the small black dome mounted above the foyer arch.

The security camera.

Richard slowly stood.

Vanessa's face changed.

Just for a second.

But Anna saw it.

Richard saw it too.

"Tom," Richard called to the head of security through the intercom. "Pull the last thirty minutes from the foyer and upstairs hall. Now."

"Richard," Vanessa said quietly, "this is ridiculous."

"Then the video will prove it."

Five minutes later, they were in Richard's office.

The footage began.

Leo appeared at the top of the stairs holding a small wooden train.

Vanessa followed him.

She grabbed his wrist.

Leo tried to pull away.

Anna felt Richard stop breathing beside her.

On-screen, Vanessa crouched and said something to Leo.

Tom increased the audio.

Vanessa's recorded voice filled the room.

"Where did Anna put the red envelope?"

Leo whimpered.

"No."

Vanessa tightened her grip.

"Tell me."

Leo pulled backward.

Vanessa let go.

He lost his balance.

And fell.

Richard turned toward Vanessa.

She had gone completely pale.

But Anna was no longer looking at her.

She was staring at the screen.

Because just before Leo fell, Vanessa had looked directly into the camera and whispered something else.

Tom replayed it.

This time they all heard her clearly.

"If he gets hurt, Richard will fire Anna tonight."

Richard's voice became almost unrecognizable.

"What red envelope?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Anna did.

"I think I know."
