Chapter 14 - The Six Missing Hours

Richard did not remember seeing Julia after the crash.

That was the problem.

He remembered the phone call at 11:18 p.m.

He remembered arriving at the hospital.

He remembered a doctor telling him they had done everything they could.

He remembered Margaret holding his shoulders while he vomited into a trash can.

But federal agents showed him a hospital access log.

At 1:42 a.m., Richard's badge entered a private recovery corridor.

At 1:58, it exited.

Julia's official time of death was 2:07.

"I wasn't there," Richard said.

The agent slid over a still image from a hallway camera.

A man in Richard's coat walked toward Julia's room.

His face was turned away.

"That's not proof."

"No. But it's enough for Nathan to build a story."

Tom studied the image.

"Zoom the left hand."

The agent did.

The man's wedding ring was on his left hand.

Richard wore his on the right because of an old injury.

"Not him," Anna said.

The agent looked at Richard's hand.

Then back at the image.

"Who had access to your coat?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Nathan. He met me at the hospital."

Nathan had impersonated him.

But why enter Julia's room?

The answer came from a retired nurse.

She remembered Julia waking briefly after surgery.

"She was scared," the nurse said. "She kept asking for her husband."

"Did Richard come in?"

"A man did. I assumed it was him. He had the family badge."

"What happened?"

The nurse's eyes filled with guilt.

"He asked us to give them privacy. Five minutes later, her monitor alarmed."

The agents found archived medication records.

Julia had received an injection during those missing minutes.

Not ordered by any doctor.

A sedative combined with a cardiac depressant.

The same clinic supplier linked to Dr. Porter.

Richard sat down.

"Nathan killed her in the hospital."

"We believe he finished what the crash didn't," the agent said.

Vanessa began crying silently.

Margaret stared at the floor.

Anna felt no triumph.

Only grief.

Julia had survived the road.

She had survived the crash.

And someone who knew exactly how much Richard trusted him had walked into her room wearing Richard's coat.

Nathan finally agreed to talk after prosecutors showed him the microSD audit.

He asked for a deal.

He admitted the fraud.

Admitted paying Dr. Porter.

Admitted entering Julia's hospital room.

Then he stopped.

"I didn't decide to kill her," he said.

The federal agent stared at him through the interview-room glass.

"Who did?"

Nathan smiled tiredly.

"You still think this was about money."

Richard watched from the other side.

Nathan leaned toward the microphone.

"Julia found something worse than fraud. She found out the Bennett company had been paying confidential settlements for years."

Margaret stiffened beside Richard.

Nathan continued.

"One of those settlements involved a child."

Anna looked at Margaret.

The older woman had gone pale.

Richard noticed.

"Mom?"

Margaret whispered, "No."

Nathan looked directly toward the one-way glass as if he could see them.

"Ask Margaret who Leo's grandfather really was protecting."
