Chapter 7 - We Started A Relationship—And Faced The Challenges Together**

Nolan was arrested that night.

He was charged with kidnapping, assault, and a long list of other crimes.

He would be in prison for a very long time.

I never had to be afraid of him again.

But the real challenge was just beginning.

Dante and I were together now.

Officially.

And it wasn’t easy.

There was the age difference.

People whispered about it behind our backs.

Called me a gold digger.

Said I was just using him for his money and power.

It hurt, but Dante always held my hand a little tighter when he heard the comments.

Always told me their opinions didn’t matter.

Only ours did.

There was the danger of his life.

Rival families tried to test him, to get to him through me.

But Dante was always one step ahead.

He increased security.

He taught me how to defend myself.

He made sure I was never alone, never unprotected.

And slowly, I learned to live with it.

To accept that danger was part of who he was, but that he would never let it touch me.

There was his family, or what was left of it.

His sister was wary of me at first.

Thought I was just another person trying to take advantage of her brother.

But after she saw how happy he was with me, after she saw how I cared for him, she welcomed me with open arms.

She became the sister I never had.

And there was my own fear.

Fear that I wasn’t good enough for him.

Fear that he would wake up one day and realize he could do better.

Fear that I would lose him, just like he had lost his first wife and son.

But Dante was patient with me.

He showed me every single day that he loved me.

With small gestures—bringing me coffee in the morning, leaving flowers on my desk, holding my hand through every meeting.

With grand gestures—taking me to Italy to see where he grew up, funding a shelter for abused women in my name, asking me to run the charity foundation he had started in his son’s memory.

We built a life together.

A good life.

Full of love and laughter and purpose.

I found my voice again.

I became confident, strong, the woman I had always wanted to be.

And Dante found peace again.

He started sleeping through the night.

He started smiling more.

He started living again, not just existing.

One evening, about six months after the kidnapping, we were sitting in the garden of the townhouse.

The stars were bright above us.

Dante held me in his arms, my head resting on his chest.

“Elena,” he said softly.

I looked up at him.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

My breath caught.

He opened it.

Inside was a ring.

Simple, elegant, with a single diamond that sparkled in the starlight.

“I know we’ve only been together a short time,” he said, his voice steady but full of emotion.

“I know there’s a big age difference between us. I know my life is dangerous and complicated and not what most women would choose. But I also know that I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone. That you saved me just as much as I saved you. That I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy, keeping you safe, loving you with everything I have.”

He took the ring out of the box.

“Elena Marie Carter, will you marry me?”

Tears streamed down my face as I nodded, unable to speak for a moment.

“Yes,” I whispered finally.

May you like

“Yes, Dante. A thousand times yes.”

He slipped the ring onto my finger and kissed me, and for the first time in my life, I knew with absolute certainty that I was home.
