Chapter 5 - MAEVE'S LAST NIGHT

Brinley remembered pieces.
Not enough for a police report.
Enough to keep Belle awake.
A motel room.
Maeve crying.
Thomas arguing with someone outside.
A black coat.
Rain.
Then Renick arriving later.
But Renick had not been there the night Maeve died.
He had been in New York.
Brinley’s memory had folded two nights together.
That mattered.
Belle liked Dr. Evelyn Park immediately because Evelyn said it mattered.
“Children are not cameras.”
She spoke to Renick.
“They remember fear in pieces.”
Renick nodded.
“Can we recover the pieces?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Not by squeezing.”
He glanced at Belle.
Belle almost smiled.
Renick noticed.
“Don’t.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You didn’t have to.”
Evelyn interviewed Brinley gently.
Micah sat in the hallway coloring.
Nobody asked him to leave.
After forty minutes, Evelyn came out.
“Maeve took Brinley somewhere before the crash.”
“Why?” Renick asked.
“She told Brinley they were going to meet ‘the repair man.’”
Belle looked at Thomas’s photograph.
Evelyn continued.
“Brinley remembers her mother saying, ‘Thomas has the copy.’”
“A copy of what?”
“No idea.”
Renick called Sully.
Sully found an old Kavanaugh storage inventory.
Thomas had maintained a sealed server cabinet at a warehouse in South Boston.
The warehouse that later burned.
Renick stared at the address.
Belle did too.
Thomas died in that fire.
But fire records showed one section survived.
The basement utility room.
They went that night.
Belle insisted on coming.
Renick said no.
Belle got into the SUV anyway.
He stared at her.
“You’re difficult.”
“People keep saying that when I don’t obey them.”
He shut the door.
At the warehouse, the basement smelled like rust and river water.
Sully pried open an electrical panel.
Behind it sat a waterproof case.
Thomas’s initials were scratched into the lid.
Belle could not touch it.
Renick opened it.
Inside were three flash drives.
A paper ledger.
And one photograph.
Maeve Kavanaugh standing beside Thomas Ashford.
Between them was Declan Kavanaugh.
All three were smiling.
On the back, Thomas had written.

IF RENICK SEES THIS, SOMEBODY ALREADY FAILED.
