Chapter 14 - TWO YEARS LATER

Two years later, Micah was nine.

Brinley was ten.

Belle had a job maintaining surgical facilities at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Her hands were still rough.

She liked them that way.

Renick sold the old estate.

Nobody wanted the balcony.

He donated part of the land to a trauma center for children affected by violence.

The rest became boring commercial property.

He said boring was underrated.

Belle agreed.

They were not dating.

Then they were.

Not because he bought flowers.

He did.

She returned the first bouquet because it cost more than her monthly electric bill.

He bought grocery-store daisies next time.

She kept those.

Their first kiss happened in a hospital parking garage after Renick spent three hours helping Micah build a science-fair volcano that did not erupt.

It was awkward.

Belle laughed into his mouth.

Renick looked offended.

“Was that funny?”

“A little.”

“Great.”

They kissed again.

Better.

Brinley hated being left out of anything.

Micah hated when people called him brave.

“I was scared.”

Belle told him.

“That’s what brave usually means.”

He rolled his eyes.

Children hate good lines when mothers use them.

Maeve’s sealed letter remained in Belle’s safe.

On Brinley’s tenth birthday, Renick asked if she wanted it.

Brinley said no.

Then yes.

Then no.

They waited.

Three months later, she asked.

Belle gave it to her.

Maeve had written mostly ordinary things.

Favorite soup.

A story about Brinley biting a doctor at age two.

A reminder that her father burned toast.

Then one paragraph.

If people ever tell you the Kavanaugh name means you owe the family something, walk away.

You owe nobody a life you did not choose.

Brinley read it twice.

Then gave it to Micah.

“You read.”

He did.

Afterward, he said.

“Your mom sounds bossy.”

Brinley smiled.

“She was.”

Renick cried in the kitchen where he thought nobody saw.

Belle saw.

She did not mention it.

Then Sully called.

A demolition crew had found a sealed metal box inside the old estate wall.

One last item from Thomas Ashford.

May you like

Addressed to Micah.
