Chapter 12 - LOCKER 214

South Station had thousands of lockers over the years.

Most were gone.

One old luggage facility still maintained private boxes for long-term clients.

Maeve had rented Locker 214 under her maiden name.

The brass key fit.

Inside was a red leather folder.

No diamonds.

No cash.

Paper.

Renick laughed once.

“Maeve hated digital backups.”

Belle opened the folder.

Original ledgers.

Signatures.

Payments.

Sebastian Byrne’s handwritten notes.

Enough to bury him legally.

Then a second envelope.

FOR BRINLEY.

Renick did not open it.

He handed it to Belle.

“She’s eight.”

“Then keep it until she wants it.”

Belle looked at him.

“You sure?”

“No.”

Good answer.

Federal prosecutors secured the original evidence.

Sebastian’s attorneys changed strategy within two days.

Plea negotiations began.

He faced murder conspiracy for Maeve.

Arson and murder conspiracy for Thomas.

Attempted murder for Brinley and Micah.

Racketeering.

Bribery.

Witness intimidation.

The list was ugly.

Sully testified about his father.

Declan testified about Maeve.

Renick testified about his own family businesses.

That one made headlines.

BOSTON BOSS TURNS STATE’S EVIDENCE AGAINST HIS OWN EMPIRE.

Renick hated the word boss.

Belle teased him once.

He did not laugh.

Then did later.

The old Kavanaugh structure collapsed fast once people stopped believing Renick would protect them.

Three men fled.

Five pleaded.

One city official resigned.

A retired detective was indicted.

Brinley returned to school under a different security plan.

Micah returned too.

He told his class he spent a month “at a weird hotel.”

Belle let that stand.

Then a reporter found her.

He waited outside the school.

“Mrs. Ashford, did your son save a mafia princess?”

Belle kept walking.

Micah stopped.

“She’s not a princess.”

The reporter smiled.

“What is she?”

Micah shrugged.

“Brinley.”

The clip went viral.

Belle hated that.

Brinley loved it.

Renick bought Micah ice cream.

Belle made him pay her back exactly $4.75 because she did not want “mob ice cream debt.”

That became a family joke before any of them admitted they had become something like a family.

Then Sebastian accepted a plea.

But before sentencing, he requested one last statement.

Not to Renick.

May you like

To Micah.
