Chapter 2: Cracks in the Facade
At the hospital, doctors confirmed Emily’s bruises were weeks old. Harlan didn’t waste a second. While his daughter rested, he tore into the investigation like a man possessed.
“You really thought you could put your hands on my little girl and get away with it?” Harlan growled during the first interrogation.
Ryan sneered from behind the glass. “She’s my wife. Mind your own business, old man.”
Margaret, sitting beside her son, lifted her chin. “Emily’s always been dramatic. Those bruises? She falls a lot.”
But the evidence told a different story. Hidden cameras, bank records, and Emily’s tearful testimony painted a nightmare. Ryan had been draining Emily’s inheritance. Margaret had been drugging her food to keep her weak and compliant.
“You poisoned my daughter?” Harlan slammed the table. “You wanted her trapped so you could control the baby’s future money. Sick bastards.”
Margaret finally cracked. “She was going to leave and take everything! We had to stop her!”
Harlan smiled coldly. “You’re both going down for a long time.”

That night, as Harlan reviewed the final files, his phone rang from an unknown number.
A distorted voice whispered, “Chief Reeves… if you want your daughter and grandson to live to see tomorrow, drop the case. We own people higher than you.”
