Chapter 20 - The Brother Who Never Died

The FBI traced the voicemail to a prepaid phone that had been destroyed before we finished listening.

For two days, nothing happened.

That was almost worse.

Claire moved into the guest room.

Vanessa stayed with her sister while investigators decided what charges, if any, her cooperation might reduce.

I did not know whether our marriage could survive.

I did know the children were safe.

For the moment.

Marcus Hale gave prosecutors the location of Adrian’s hidden servers.

The continuity program collapsed in public.

News channels called it the largest corporate identity fraud scheme in state history.

They were wrong.

They only knew the part we had uploaded.

On the third night, Claire and I opened the final encrypted directory from Elena’s files.

NATHAN CARTER.

Inside were photographs taken across thirty years.

A boy at boarding school.

A teenager entering a clinic.

A young man standing beside Adrian Voss.

Then a picture from my wedding.

Nathan stood in the background.

Watching.

I had spent my entire life believing I was an only son.

My twin had been close enough to attend my wedding.

Claire whispered, “Dad hid him.”

“Why?”

We opened a letter from our father.

DANIEL WAS TOO EMOTIONAL FOR THE PROGRAM. NATHAN WAS NOT.

I read the sentence twice.

Our father had separated us as infants.

Raised me inside the family.

Raised Nathan inside the program.

One son to inherit the company.

One son trained to replace him if necessary.

Claire sat back, horrified.

“Adrian didn’t create the replacement.”

“No.”

“He inherited him.”

The front door opened downstairs.

No alarm.

No broken glass.

Someone knew the code.

I stood.

Claire grabbed my arm.

Footsteps entered the hallway.

Slow.

Familiar.

A man appeared in the kitchen doorway.

For a moment I thought I was looking into a mirror that had aged differently.

Same height.

Same eyes.

Same scar on the left eyebrow, though his ran deeper.

Nathan Carter smiled.

Claire whispered, “Oh my God.”

He looked at her.

“Hi, Claire.”

Then at me.

“Hi, Danny.”

Only Claire called me that.

My hands curled into fists.

“What do you want?”

Nathan’s smile disappeared.

“To finish what Dad started.”

I stepped between him and Claire.

“You’re not taking this company.”

He laughed softly.

“I don’t want the company.”

“Then what?”

He reached into his coat.

Claire tensed.

Nathan pulled out an old cassette recorder.

Our father’s handwriting covered the label.

FOR DANIEL AND NATHAN — PLAY TOGETHER.

Nathan placed it on the table.

“Dad didn’t build the program to control Carter Medical.”

He pressed PLAY.

Our father’s voice filled the room.

“If both my sons are hearing this, Adrian failed.”

Claire stared at us.

The tape continued.

“And Daniel has finally learned the wrong version of the truth.”

Nathan looked at me.

I could not move.

Our father said one final sentence before the recording cut to static.

“Claire was never the target.”

I looked at my sister.

Nathan whispered:

“You were.”

And in that moment, I understood the thirteen months of lies had not begun with Claire’s disappearance.

They had begun the day I was born.
