Chapter 15 - Claire Is Alive

I opened the door.

Claire stood there.

For thirteen months I had imagined what I would say if I found her.

I said none of it.

I pulled her into my arms.

She was real.

Too thin.

Cold.

Alive.

She held on to me for three seconds.

Then she pushed me away.

“We have to go.”

Hale stared at her like he was seeing a ghost.

“Claire.”

She slapped him.

Hard.

“That’s for leaving me on the stairs.”

He nodded.

“Fair.”

We moved through the service corridor behind the motel kitchen.

Claire explained as we ran.

After the fall, Elena found her and got her out of Carter House. Elena revealed Adrian’s plan and begged Claire to disappear. Two days later, Elena was killed.

Claire and Hale used Elena’s hospital record to create Claire’s legal death.

Then Claire spent months collecting evidence against Adrian.

“What about the emails?” I asked.

“The first seven were mine. Scheduled.”

“The others?”

“Adrian’s team.”

“Why keep pretending you were alive if they wanted everyone to think you were dead?”

“Because they wanted you confused, not grieving.”

I understood.

Grief eventually becomes certainty.

Confusion keeps you controllable.

We reached the alley.

A car waited.

Vanessa was behind the wheel.

I stopped.

Claire did not.

“Get in.”

“You trust her?”

“With my life.”

Vanessa looked at me through the windshield.

That hurt more than it should have.

Inside the car, Claire finally told me why Vanessa had drugged my coffee.

“She thought she was helping me measure whether the conditioning was still active.”

Vanessa said, “The pills Marcus gave me were supposed to be harmless.”

“They were,” Claire said.

“So who kept sedating me?”

Claire looked at me.

“The house.”

I laughed once.

“What does that mean?”

“Dad installed an experimental medical ventilation system after his stroke. Adrian modified it.”

Hale whispered, “Aerosol delivery.”

Claire nodded.

“Tiny doses. Enough to make you suggestible. Enough to blur memory.”

My own home had been dosing me.

Vanessa looked sick.

Claire continued.

“And it’s still active.”

I thought of Noah.

Lily.

My children sleeping in that house.

I grabbed my phone.

Claire caught my wrist.

“Don’t call them.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian just sent me a picture.”

She showed me the screen.

Mrs. Alvarez was unconscious on her kitchen floor.

The children were gone.
