Chapter 2: The House That Was Never Mine

I backed away.

“No. This is insane.”

My husband closed the door.

Locked it.

Then sat on the edge of the bed.

Calm.

Relaxed.

Like we were discussing dinner.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.”

My voice cracked.

“Harder for what?”

He sighed.

And finally said it:

“For transition.”

Lila leaned against the wall.

“Sweetheart, you were always temporary.”

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“I planned this wedding for a year.”

My husband nodded.

“And you funded it.”

Silence.

He continued:

“You paid for the venue. The catering. The dress. The rings.”

A pause.

“You were investing in yourself.”

Then he looked at me.

And added:

“We just redirected the return.”

My vision blurred.

“You used me.”

Lila clapped slowly.

“Finally.”

My husband stood up.

Walked toward me.

And for the first time…

I saw something colder than indifference.

Control.

“This house,” he said, gesturing around the bedroom, “is not shared property.”

My voice shook.

“What is it then?”

He answered:

“It’s collateral.”

My heart stopped.

“For what?”

Lila smiled.

“For the merger.”

I froze.

“What merger?”

My husband stepped back.

Picked up the folder again.

And turned it toward me.

At the bottom of page seven…

Was a clause I had missed.

Marriage Completion Clause: triggers corporate acquisition of Bennett Holdings

My father’s company.

My family empire.

My breath disappeared.

“You’re trying to take my father’s company?”

My husband corrected softly:

“No.”

May you like

He paused.

“We already did.”
