Chapter 9 - Noah Was Gone

Adrian reached the nursery in under thirty seconds.

The bassinet was empty.

The portable monitor lay on its side.

Mrs. Dalton, the night nurse, was crying in the hall.

“She said you sent her.”

“Who?”

“Mrs. Reed.”

Adrian felt the world narrow.

“She said Vanessa had been arrested and Noah needed to be moved before reporters arrived.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“She showed me a text.”

A message that looked like it came from Adrian’s number.

It had not.

Elena ran in behind him.

“Sophie?”

“With Mrs. Alvarez.”

“Good.”

Adrian called Mara.

Federal authorities locked down the private airfield.

The aircraft had not departed.

But Isabelle was not there.

Neither was Noah.

The flight plan was a distraction.

A black sedan left the field twelve minutes earlier.

Traffic cameras tracked it north.

Adrian grabbed his keys.

Mara stopped him at the front door.

“You are not chasing a kidnapping suspect.”

“That is my son.”

“And you being his father does not make you trained.”

The words enraged him.

They also saved him from repeating every old mistake.

He handed her the keys.

“What can I do?”

“Give me every property Isabelle can access.”

Adrian opened the family asset map.

Houses.

Clubs.

Storage.

Reed Advisory offices.

Then Elena pointed at one address.

“What is that?”

An old lakeside guesthouse owned by the Whitmore Foundation.

Closed for renovations.

Ten miles from the private airfield.

Mara sent units.

Adrian waited in the command room with Sophie.

He wanted her upstairs.

She refused.

This time he did not force her.

He gave her headphones and a movie while adults handled the search.

Twenty-seven minutes later, Mara called.

“Noah is safe.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Isabelle?”

“In custody.”

“What happened?”

“She was at the guesthouse with the baby and two suitcases.”

“Why take him?”

“Leverage.”

Adrian’s stomach turned.

Isabelle’s first statement through counsel was that she was protecting Noah from “household instability.”

Her second was that Vanessa had asked her to take him.

Vanessa screamed when she heard.

“I did not!”

Mara believed the phone records more than either woman.

Isabelle had sent Vanessa three unanswered messages after the music-room footage appeared.

GET NOAH OUT.

WE NEED TIME.

DO NOT TALK.

Vanessa had not replied.

For once, the evidence separated them.

Isabelle acted alone in taking Noah.

That did not erase Vanessa’s other choices.

Noah returned after a hospital examination.

Healthy.

Adrian held him until his arms ached.

Sophie sat beside him.

Elena stood across the room.

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew Isabelle might run?”

“No.”

“You pointed to the guesthouse.”

“Lydia used to take Sophie there when Richard’s family dinners became unbearable.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Of course.

He knew none of the places his wife used to escape his family.

That realization sat beside him like another accusation.

The next morning, DNA confirmed the remains in the orchard belonged to Lydia Whitmore.

Cause of death could not be determined perfectly after seven years.

But the skull injury matched the piano edge shown on the recording.

Medical experts also found evidence consistent with survival for a period after the injury.

The delay in emergency treatment became central.

Vanessa was arrested on charges that included manslaughter, obstruction, conspiracy, and financial crimes.

Gregory Kane was charged with obstruction, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.

Isabelle faced kidnapping-related charges, obstruction, financial crimes, and conspiracy.

Paul Renn was located in Florida.

He agreed to return with counsel.

Adrian was not arrested.

That almost made him angry.

Mara noticed.

“You want punishment to simplify guilt.”

He looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“You think if nobody charges you, you might be tempted to decide you did nothing wrong.”

Adrian looked toward Sophie.

“I won’t.”

“Good.”

Then Mara handed him a subpoena.

“What’s this?”

“Grand jury.”

He stared.

“You’re going to testify about your own order to lock the gate.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

The truth was coming for everyone.

Including the man who had finally decided to look at it.
