Chapter 2 - The Silver Bird

Adrian reached the old music room before security did.

Gregory Kane had already torn one strip of carved wood from the wall beside the piano.

“Step away,” Adrian said.

Gregory turned slowly.

He was sixty-eight now. White hair. Tailored suit. The same measured expression he had worn at Lydia’s funeral.

“You should not be down here.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“This is my house.”

Gregory looked at Sophie’s key in Adrian’s hand.

“That is exactly the problem.”

Two guards entered behind Adrian.

This time, Adrian chose his words carefully.

“Do not touch him unless he tries to leave.”

Gregory’s mouth tightened.

Adrian noticed the difference immediately.

Seven years earlier, he had ordered people to stop Lydia first and ask questions later.

He would not repeat it.

Elena arrived with Sophie behind her.

Adrian turned sharply.

“She should not be here.”

Sophie said, “It’s my key.”

Elena crouched beside her.

“You can wait outside if you want.”

Sophie shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“She’s seven.”

“And she has spent seven years being told her memories were nightmares.”

That silenced him.

The old piano stood beneath a carved silver bird mounted on the wall.

Sophie touched its wing.

“It turns.”

Adrian had never known.

The bird rotated ninety degrees, revealing a small keyhole.

Sophie held out her palm.

“Mom said it opens when the music stops.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

“Lydia used to say that when she closed the piano lid.”

Adrian inserted the key.

A hidden panel clicked.

Behind it was a narrow steel compartment.

Gregory moved.

One step.

Security blocked him.

“Don’t,” he said.

Adrian opened the compartment.

Inside were three things.

A digital recorder.

A sealed evidence envelope.

And a handwritten letter addressed to Sophie.

Sophie reached for the letter.

Elena gently stopped her.

“Let your dad check first.”

Adrian stared at her.

Even now, after his family had arrested her on a false accusation, she was protecting his daughter from something she had spent years trying to expose.

He opened the evidence envelope.

Inside was a memory card labeled:

NURSERY BACKUP — OCTOBER 14.

The night Lydia died.

Gregory said, “That card is privileged family material.”

Detective Mara Holt entered behind him.

“No,” she said. “Now it’s potential evidence.”

Adrian knew Mara.

Seven years earlier, she had been the junior detective who refused to call Lydia’s death a simple accident until the department closed the case over her objections.

She looked at Elena.

“You came back.”

Elena nodded.

“I said I would when Sophie was old enough to remember.”

Adrian turned between them.

“You know each other?”

Mara’s eyes stayed on him.

“Elena tried to tell us what happened seven years ago.”

Adrian’s face went cold.

“I was told she disappeared after stealing from Lydia.”

Elena looked at him.

“Your father told you that.”

“Yes.”

“And you believed him.”

Adrian had no answer.

Mara bagged the memory card.

Then she pointed toward Noah’s nursery upstairs.

“Before we touch seven years ago, I need to deal with tonight.”

Vanessa had accused Elena of attacking a baby.

The paramedics found no injury caused by Elena.

Noah had choked on a small translucent plastic ring.

A piece that did not belong to any toy in the nursery.

Mara held up an evidence bag.

Elena’s face changed.

“What?” Adrian asked.

Elena whispered, “That’s from Mrs. Vanessa’s perfume atomizer.”

Vanessa’s hand flew to her throat.

Mara turned toward her.

“Interesting.”

Vanessa snapped, “That proves nothing.”

“No,” Mara said.

Then she looked at the nursery monitor.

“But the backup camera might.”

Vanessa went completely still.
