Chapter 6 - He Didn’t Know, But He Had Helped

Adrian wanted the sentence to save him.

He doesn’t know.

Lydia had believed, even injured and frightened, that he did not know what Richard was doing.

But Adrian also heard his own voice on the first recording.

Lock the east gate.

Do not let her leave with Sophie.

He had helped build the cage even if he did not choose what happened inside it.

Mara understood before he said anything.

“Not knowing the cover-up is not the same as having no responsibility.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I know.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly through tears.

“Do you?”

Everyone turned.

She pointed at Adrian.

“You called Lydia unstable for months.”

“I did not.”

“You told me she was obsessed with money moving through the foundation.”

“She was investigating fraud.”

“You didn’t believe that then.”

Adrian stopped.

Vanessa continued.

“You told Richard to ‘handle it’ when she threatened to go to the board.”

His stomach tightened.

He remembered a meeting.

Richard saying Lydia was creating family drama.

Adrian saying, I have Tokyo in the morning. Handle it.

Two words.

Handle it.

He had not ordered fraud.

Not violence.

But he had repeatedly outsourced his marriage to people who benefited from controlling it.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“You think I created the whole thing because you married me later.”

“You helped.”

“Yes.”

Her honesty startled him.

“I was having an affair with you.”

Adrian looked away.

There it was.

The part of the past he had spent years softening.

The affair began six weeks before Lydia died.

Adrian always told himself the marriage was already broken.

Now Lydia’s recordings made that story feel convenient.

Vanessa continued.

“Lydia found out about us. She found Northstar. She thought the two were one scheme.”

“Were they?” Mara asked.

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Richard used my consulting company to move foundation money. I thought it was legitimate intercompany reimbursement at first.”

“At first?”

“Later I knew it was hiding something.”

“And you kept taking fees.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

Adrian’s anger felt useless.

Every person in the room had a different size piece of the same disaster.

Mara asked Gregory for the clinic location.

The building had been demolished five years earlier.

But the company archives listed medical waste and patient-transfer logs.

One private ambulance left the clinic at 1:38 a.m.

Destination field blank.

Driver: Paul Renn.

Adrian knew that name too.

Former head of Whitmore security.

Retired in Florida.

Mara called.

No answer.

Then a detective found an old toll record.

The ambulance crossed the county line at 2:03 a.m.

Toward Lake Ashford.

That was where Lydia’s car had been found burned beside a ravine.

Adrian had been told she crashed while trying to leave.

Now the truth was obvious.

They put her in the car after she died.

Staged the crash.

Used fire to destroy evidence.

Then identified the body through jewelry and a dental chart Dr. Vale controlled.

Mara said, “We will need exhumation—”

Adrian shook his head.

“She was cremated.”

Mara looked at Gregory.

“Was she?”

Gregory went completely still.

Adrian turned.

“What?”

Gregory swallowed.

“Richard changed the instructions.”

“To what?”

“He said cremation was too final if questions came later.”

Adrian felt cold.

“Where is Lydia?”

Gregory looked toward the window.

“There was a private burial.”

“Where?”

“Whitmore land.”

Adrian stared.

His family owned thousands of acres.

“Where?”

Gregory’s voice dropped.

“The old orchard.”

Adrian knew exactly which orchard.

It sat behind the summer chapel.

A place Sophie rode ponies every spring.

Then Gregory added one more sentence.

“Your father visited the grave every year.”
