Chapter 14: The Confession Face-To-Face

We met her in a small, secure room at the county jail. No cameras, no lawyers—just us, and a guard standing by the door.

Colleen looked small now. Her hair pulled back, no makeup, no veil.

“I wanted to say it to your face,” she said quiet. “I was jealous. I hated that they loved you more. I thought if you were gone… everything would be mine.”

“It never would have been enough,” I said. “You would have found something else to want. Someone else to envy.”

She nodded slowly. “I know that now. Too late.”

She slid a folded paper across the table. “This is the full confession. Every detail. And a note… for your parents.”

I picked it up. “Thank you for finally telling the truth.”

“I’m not sorry I did it,” she whispered. “But I’m sorry I made you think you were the bad one.”

I stood up to leave. At the door, I paused. “You could have been my sister. You chose to be my enemy.”

Then I walked out.
