Chapter 11: The Letter He Left

I unfolded it slow, my hands trembling.
*To my Clara,* it read. If something ever happens to us, know this: you are enough. You are loved. And whoever tries to take that from you will never succeed. You are stronger than the fire. Stronger than the lies. Stronger than fear.
I cried then—really cried—for the first time since that night. Elias handed me another handkerchief, and this time he let me lean on his shoulder.
When I could breathe again, I looked up. “Why did you keep looking for me? All these years?”
“Because your father held my hand while he was dying,” Elias said quiet. “He made me promise: Find my girl. Tell her she didn’t do it. I made him that promise. And I don’t break promises.”
Outside, the sun was coming up—pale gold, soft over the trees. The wedding was gone. The lies were gone. But for the first time, I wasn’t alone.
Then the detective walked back in, face serious.
“We found something else in Colleen’s car,” he said. “Something she was going to send you after the wedding.”
