PART 2 — "YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES."
No one spoke.
Daniel quietly closed the front door behind him.
The click of the deadbolt echoed through the living room.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Oh... Daniel."
"We didn't know you were coming."
He didn't answer.
His eyes stayed on me.
Still kneeling.
Still shaking.
His expression hardened.
"Mom."
His voice was gentle now.
"You can stand."
I tried.
My knees refused.
Daniel crossed the room in three quick strides and helped me to my feet.
His hands were steady.
Careful.
The same hands that had held mine at his father's funeral.
He looked down at the red marks on my knees.
Then slowly turned toward Michael.
"You watched this happen?"
Michael swallowed.
"It's not what it looks like."
Daniel nodded once.
"I know."
"It looks worse."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Judge Brooks, Eleanor misunderstood—"
"Be quiet."
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
The room fell silent.
Daniel placed the thick envelope on the coffee table.
"You wanted Mom out of this house."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Michael owns half of it."
Daniel smiled.
"No."
"He doesn't."
She frowned.
"What?"
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of my late husband's will.
The trust agreement.
And the deed.
"My father transferred this house into an irrevocable trust eighteen years ago."
He slid the papers across the table.
"Our mother is the only lifetime beneficiary."
"No one can sell it."
"No one can refinance it."
"No one can remove her."
Vanessa's smile vanished.
"Michael..."
She turned toward him.
"You told me this house would be ours."
Michael couldn't look at her.
"I... thought it would."
Daniel's voice cut through the silence.
"You thought wrong."
He looked at Vanessa.
"You've been living here rent-free for eight months."
"You changed the locks."
"Sold furniture."
Removed family property.
He reached into another folder.
"I have receipts."
"Security footage."
"Online sales records."
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Daniel checked his watch.
"You have ten minutes."
"To pack everything that belongs to you."
"And if one family photograph is missing..."
"I'll add theft to the civil complaint."
Vanessa laughed again.
May you like
Only this time...
No one believed it.
