CHAPTER 2: PLAYING DUMB

The next morning, Emily acted normal.
"Coffee?" she asked Ryan.
"Sure. Thanks, babe."
He smiled.
Emily almost threw the mug at him.
Instead, she smiled back.
Later, she drove to her sister Sophia's apartment.
Sophia opened the door, surprised.
"Emily! You should've called."
Emily hugged her.
"I just missed you."
Sophia looked nervous.
Inside the apartment, Emily noticed something.
A men's jacket.
Ryan's jacket.
She recognized the missing button she had sewn back on last winter.
Sophia quickly grabbed it.
"Oh, uh... a friend left it."
Emily nodded.
"Of course."
That evening, Emily hired a private investigator.
Three days later, she received photos.
Ryan and Sophia.
Kissing.
Holding hands.
Entering a hotel.
Emily cried for exactly ten minutes.
Then she stopped.
"No," she whispered.
"They want a war? Fine."
She called the investigator.
"I need everything."
The investigator hesitated.
"Mrs. Parker... are you sure?"
Emily's voice turned cold.
"Very."
An hour later, the investigator called back.
"Emily... I found something strange."
"What?"
"Your husband and sister recently took out life insurance policies."
Emily felt ice run through her veins.
Both policies listed the same beneficiary.
May you like
Sophia.
