By sunrise...
NexusCore wasn't collapsing.
It was bleeding.
The first resignation came at 4:18 a.m.
The second at 4:26.
Then three vice presidents requested emergency leave.
The company's largest institutional investor demanded an immediate board meeting.
The bank financing its expansion suspended negotiations.
No public announcement had been made.
No accusations had been released.
Yet somehow...
Everyone important already knew.
Matthew stormed into headquarters just after seven.
The lobby felt different.
Employees stopped talking when he walked past.
Nobody smiled.
Nobody made eye contact.
His assistant stood outside his office.
"They're waiting."
"Who?"
"The board."
Inside...
Nine directors sat around the conference table.
None stood to greet him.
Arthur Sterling wasn't there.
He didn't need to be.
The Chairman folded his hands.
"We've received disturbing information."
Matthew forced a laugh.
"About what?"
The room remained silent.
Then the company's General Counsel slid several photographs across the table.
Broken glass.
Blood.
Bruises.
Time stamps.
Emergency medical reports.
Matthew stared.
"Where did you get these?"
"The question isn't where."
The Chairman leaned forward.
"The question is whether they're authentic."
Matthew swallowed.
"This is private."
"No."
The Chairman's voice was cold.
"It's corporate."
Matthew frowned.
"What?"
"You assaulted the woman who owns twelve percent of this company."
Silence.
His face drained of color.
He had forgotten.
Years earlier...
During the company's first funding round...
Clare had quietly kept the equity Matthew insisted she didn't need.
Arthur Sterling had made sure of it.
He had never told Matthew.
"You don't have controlling interest."
The Chairman continued.
"Clare Sterling Hayes does."
Matthew whispered,
"That's impossible."
The company's attorney slid another document forward.
"It isn't."
At that same moment...
Across town...
Clare slowly opened her eyes inside a private hospital suite.
Morning sunlight filled the room.
Her father sat beside the window.
He hadn't slept.
When he noticed she was awake, he smiled.
"Good morning."
She looked at him.
"I lost everything."
Arthur shook his head.
May you like
"No."
"You just found your way home."
