The first person through the penthouse door wasn't the paramedic.

It was Henderson.

For thirty-one years, Arthur Sterling's head of security had protected presidents, billionaires, and diplomats.

Tonight, he looked at Clare.

Then at the cane.

His face hardened.

"No one touches anything," he ordered.

Two security officers spread through the apartment.

Another photographed every room.

The shattered vase.

The blood.

The broken phone case.

The cane resting on the sofa.

Nothing moved.

Nothing disappeared.

Five minutes later the elevator doors opened again.

Arthur Sterling stepped out.

He wasn't running.

He never ran.

But Clare had never seen him move so quickly.

He crossed the marble floor in seconds.

Then stopped.

His daughter looked nothing like the woman who had walked away from his home seven years earlier.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

Afraid.

Arthur slowly knelt beside her.

His hands trembled before they touched her face.

"I'm here."

Three simple words.

They undid every wall Clare had built around herself.

"Dad..."

She buried her face against his shoulder.

"I'm sorry."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"You don't apologize for surviving."

The ambulance arrived moments later.

Doctors examined Clare while Henderson quietly handed Arthur a tablet.

"The building security footage has already been secured."

Arthur nodded.

"The concierge?"

"Cooperating."

"The valet?"

"Interviewed."

"The doorman?"

"Statement recorded."

Arthur looked once more toward the cane.

"What about Matthew?"

"He left twenty-three minutes ago."

"Where?"

"We're tracking him."

Arthur's expression never changed.

"Don't touch him."

Henderson looked surprised.

"Sir?"

"I want him comfortable."

"Comfortable?"

Arthur's eyes became ice.

"People make mistakes when they think they've won."

Across Manhattan...

Matthew walked into an exclusive rooftop lounge overlooking Central Park.

Lauren was already waiting.

"You actually did it?" she asked.

Matthew loosened his tie.

"It had to happen."

Lauren smiled.

"So she'll finally sign the divorce?"

Matthew ordered whiskey.

"She doesn't have a choice anymore."

His phone buzzed.

Then buzzed again.

Then again.

He ignored it.

Lauren laughed.

"Busy CEO."

He finally looked down.

Twenty-seven missed calls.

His CFO.

General Counsel.

Board Chairman.

Head of Investor Relations.

His smile disappeared.

"What now?"

Lauren asked.

Matthew answered.

The CFO didn't bother greeting him.

"Where the hell are you?"

"Having dinner."

"You need to come back."

"Tomorrow."

"No."

May you like

The man's voice cracked.

"Now."
