Chapter 3 - The Crash on the Bridge—The Mistress’s Real Identity

I was locked in a rolling steel cage.

The man in the passenger seat aimed a stun gun over the center console, pointing it directly at my chest. “Keep the kid quiet, Mara. It’s over.”

I looked down at Ellie, who was trembling. I looked at the heavy steel divider slowly rolling up to separate the front seats from the back.

I didn't panic. I unbuckled my seatbelt, wrapped Ellie tightly in my heavy wool trench coat, and slid my hand into my designer handbag.

When my father gave me the gold falcon phone, he warned me that Silas would eventually try to steal the family trust. He also taught me how the armored fleet was built.

I pulled a small, silver canister of pressurized pepper spray from my bag. But I didn't aim it at the men.

I aimed it straight into the rear intake vent of the SUV’s climate control system and held the trigger down.

The highly concentrated capsaicin gas instantly cycled through the AC unit, blasting directly into the front cabin.

The driver screamed, his hands flying off the steering wheel as the chemical burned his eyes. The man in the passenger seat began coughing violently, dropping the stun gun.

The SUV swerved across three lanes of traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, side-swiping a concrete barrier with a deafening screech of metal. The airbags deployed instantly.

The impact shattered the electronic locking mechanism on the rear doors.

I kicked my door open, holding Ellie, and stumbled out into the freezing rain and chaotic traffic. Horns blared around us.

I flagged down a terrified taxi driver, threw three hundred-dollar bills through the window, and climbed inside. “Drive! Get off the bridge now!”

As the taxi sped away, I opened the restricted family file on my phone, my hands shaking. I needed to understand exactly who Vanessa was.

I opened her background profile.

Vanessa wasn't just a mistress. She was a disgraced geneticist whose medical license had been revoked five years ago.

And the attached medical logs showed she was the lead embryologist at the private fertility clinic where Grant and I supposedly conceived Ellie through IVF.

I scrolled to the bottom of the file. My blood turned to ice.

The DNA report proved that I was Ellie’s biological mother. But Grant was not the father.

The father’s genetic profile belonged to a man who had been dead for ten years.
