Chapter 2 - The Blackout in the Lobby—The Men in the Gray Suits

“Give me the phone, Mara,” Grant said, his voice stripping away every ounce of the loving husband I thought I knew. He sounded like a mercenary.
“You signed a contract with Silas,” I whispered, clutching Ellie tighter against my chest. “You were hired to breed an heir.”
Vanessa, the blonde mistress, checked her glowing smartwatch and stepped back. “Grant, her biometric lock just cut off my platinum cards. Get the girl. Now.”
Grant lunged for me.
I didn’t scream. I didn’t flinch. I drove the sharp heel of my stiletto directly into his kneecap.
Grant roared in pain, buckling to the marble floor. Ellie woke up in my arms, crying out as I bolted toward the revolving glass doors of the hotel.
“Stop her!” Grant shouted.
The two massive hotel security guards standing by the exit didn’t reach for their radios to call the police. They reached for their holsters. They were Silas’s men.
I spun around, dodging behind a massive marble pillar just as a suppressed gunshot shattered the glass door I had been aiming for.
“Mommy?” Ellie whimpered, burying her face in my neck.
“I’ve got you, baby. We’re playing hide and seek,” I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs.
I pulled out the falcon phone and dialed the only number my late father told me to call if the family ever turned on me.
“Extraction,” I whispered into the receiver. “The hotel on 5th.”
“Copy, Miss Kingsley,” a deep, gravelly voice replied. “Brace for impact.”
Three seconds later, a heavily armored black SUV drove straight up the front steps of the hotel and smashed through the revolving glass doors. Shards of glass exploded across the lobby like shrapnel.
The passenger door kicked open. A man in a tactical vest with a scar across his jaw leveled an automatic rifle at the guards. “Get in!”
I sprinted to the SUV and threw myself into the back seat, covering Ellie.
The driver slammed it into reverse, tearing out onto the busy avenue.
“Thank God,” I gasped, looking at the driver. “My brother set me up. We need to get to the federal safehouse.”
The driver looked at me through the rearview mirror. His eyes were dead and cold.
“We aren't going to the safehouse, Mara,” the driver said, hitting a button that locked the rear doors. “Silas wants the girl brought directly to the estate.”
