Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Betrayal—The Locked Terminal

Julian froze, his finger still resting on the trigger of his revolver, but he didn't turn around.
“Grant,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “I made you. I pulled you out of the gutter and gave you a life.”
“You gave me a job,” Grant sneered, keeping the gun pressed against Julian’s skull. “But I’m the one who slept next to the crazy wife for three years. I’m the one who did all the dirty work while you hid on an island. Vanessa and I are taking the children, and we’re taking the fifty billion.”
Vanessa emerged from behind the elevator, clutching her bleeding shoulder, holding a flash drive. “Do it, Grant. Kill him.”
Julian started to laugh. A deep, chilling sound that echoed in the bloody vault.
“You two really are pathetic grifters,” Julian said. “Did you honestly think I didn't know you were planning to betray me? Did you think I would walk into this vault without insurance?”
Julian snapped his fingers.
The secondary blast doors locked with a heavy metallic thud. The digital displays on the walls turned bright red.
“Biometric lockdown initiated,” a computerized voice announced. “Oxygen depletion protocols engaged.”
“I rigged the vault’s fire suppression system this morning,” Julian smiled, finally turning around to face Grant’s gun. “In three minutes, all the oxygen in this room will be vacuumed out. The only way to stop it is to plug in the master cypher drive—which I have in my pocket.”
Grant’s face went pale. He pulled the trigger.
Click.
The gun didn't fire.
“I swapped the firing pin in your weapon while you were sleeping last night, Grant,” Julian mocked. “You really are an amateur.”
Grant dropped the useless gun and lunged at Julian.
Julian didn't hesitate. He raised his revolver and shot Grant twice in the chest.
Grant stumbled backward, blood pouring from his suit, and collapsed onto the floor, his eyes wide with shock. He looked at Vanessa, trying to speak, but only blood bubbled from his lips. He died staring at the ceiling.
Vanessa screamed in horror, backing against the wall.
“Now, Mara,” Julian said, ignoring the dying man and stepping toward me. “The oxygen is dropping. Plug your thumb into the terminal, unlock the money, and I will open the doors.”
I held my children tight. I could already feel the air thinning. My lungs were beginning to burn.
“You’re a monster,” I gasped.
“I’m a businessman,” Julian replied. “Unlock it.”
I stood up, leaving the children behind the pillar. I walked toward the glowing blue terminal in the center of the room.
I placed my thumb on the glass scanner.
The screen flashed green. ACCESS GRANTED. ENTER DESTINATION ACCOUNT.
Julian handed me a piece of paper with a routing number. “Type it in.”
I looked at my brother. Then, I reached into my coat and pulled out the gold falcon phone.
“You forgot one thing about our father, Julian,” I whispered. “He never trusted you either.”
I smashed the heavy satellite phone directly into the digital terminal.
Sparks showered across the vault. The screen shattered, instantly short-circuiting the entire mainframe.
Julian screamed in rage as the terminal went completely black.
“What did you do?!” Julian roared.
“I just triggered the Kingsley fail-safe,” I said, as the red lights turned into flashing strobes. “If the terminal is destroyed while under duress, the fifty billion dollars isn't locked. It’s entirely liquidated and donated to five thousand global charities.”
Julian stared at the broken glass, realizing his ten-year master plan had just turned to ash.
Then, the final stage of the fail-safe activated.
